I have two Cary Grant films -- Charade and Father Goose. Is that enough to make a Cary Grant group? Then suppose I add To Catch a Thief -- does it go in the Hitchcock group or the Cary Grant group?

Alphabetizing is the tried and true methods that's worked forever.
I can agree with that 100% but Criterions are a bit more special and sorta deserve there own spot. I am going to pull all of my Criterions out and sort them alphabetically. vv

This is unrelated to the flurry of 50%-off sale posts, but Amazon has Army of Shadows back in stock for the list price of $39.95. Now is as good a time as any to get it I suppose, if you've been wanting it.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

They're both excellent films.

Criterion need to release Gun Crazy (1950) on blu.

Also one Month until Life of Oharu is released.

If you like the old Universal classic monsters then Island of Lost Souls is definitely worth a look.

On the (slightly) more modern monster movie front they've got The Blob and Godzilla.

Cronos is also very good. It's a fairly original take on vampires and features some very good performances.

Anyone have a B&N coupon they won't be using? I used mine on an order, but had to cancel it because of an error, and the coupon is now considered 'used'

Don't! It's a terrific movie. It makes Spielberg's Empire of the Sun look like amateur hour.

Well, does the "163 minute movie" of The Last Emperor have the same quality as with the "219 minute movie" even though it the former was condensed, or shortened, by 53 minutes?

I have never seen the longer cut. It would be a miracle if it ever becomes available on BluRay.

Well that was quick and easy, so if I don't like this set-up I can change it back in no time at all.

So the Criterions are now #101 thru #116 in my collection, one cool thing that happened is Rashomon and Seven Samurai are right next to each other and Yojimbo/Sanjuro is only a few Blus down.

Oh and thanks guys for all of the great input I got today!

yes it's a horrible experience for the viewer, but you're missing a point that Pasolini was trying to make and that reveals his creativity at work. he wanted to make a movie that doesn't simply 'represent' sadism; it is sadistic in itself, a movie that wants to punish the viewer and force the viewer to come to grips with the feeling of sadistic impulses.

the distant and static camera, the closed sets, the ugliness of the cast, all of this works to simultaneously repulse the viewer while at the same time impelling the viewer into a situation of wanting more - not more horror, but more control, more of a grasp on the film and its depiction of horror. the viewer is faced with the predicament of a pointless, useless movie.

in this way, it is a film about power, and the fascist tendency towards control that the viewer herself/himself comes to experience. the viewer wants a narrative, a purpose, an aim, a trajectory, a synthesis, something to hold onto and to provide the film with a meaning. but there is none to be found. it is a hopeless torment, like what is being depicted on the screen.

shot at a distance, with no real narrative, with no hope for one, and with one brutality piled on top of another, and yet lacking any of the atmosphere or effects that can make a horror movie alluring and frightening, the viewer of Salo comes to want anything else but this, and that basic desire for meaning and purpose is surely one that the victims of fascist brutality faced . . . but it is also a desire for control and power, which more standard cinematic fare satiates for the viewer.

I had a small enough Criterion Collection that I had them mostly alphabetical with the Hitchcock films at the end leading into my Hitchcock collection, and the digipak and slipcase sets together too. With these Amazon and B&N orders in the last week, my collection has doubled, it's time for it to get a dedicated shelf...

Must be time to start speculating/wishing for the met wave of announcements.

I only have upgrades on my wishlist:

Ace In The Hole
Sulivan's Travels
The Lady Eve
Throne of Blood

I'd also be happy if Life Aquatic was announced, though it isn't as high on my wishlist.

Okay. So, it doesn't matter whether it's a cut or uncut version - it still sees as a great movie.
