Interesting article. The service, informally called wideband, can transmit a high-definition movie in about 10 minutes. It would take about 40 minutes to do that on Comcast's most popular Internet service and more than an hour on most cable systems. The speed comes with a steep price: nearly $150 a month for residential users and $200 for business customers, who get additional software and services Comcast, which has 13.2 million Internet customers, plans to offer wideband to 20% of the 49 million homes in its service areas this year and 100% by the middle of 2010, Bowling says. |

read that article...10 minutes for a 4 gig HD movie....not quite the 50 gigs that a blu-ray has.... this is why downloads won't work. terrible quality and $150 a month for internet service which with comcast will go up 300% in the next year. |

Fifty bucks more for businesses is pretty good. At my business I'm stuck with AT&T DSL @ 6mbps down and like 528 up for thirty bucks a month more than my 20 down/5 up I get at home. And that was cheap compared to the cable internet I looked into which was pretty close to the prices they're talking about here.

I'm thinking of how many Blu-rays I could buy for $150.
Now, I'm thinking of how many movies I watch in a month. Nope, not worth it even without taking into consideration the differences in quality between a 4GB movie and a 50GB movie. |

And when you try to use it, they throttle you down....

And I'm very scared of a 4GB HD movie. I'd rather buy an HD-DVD player. That's really downloads biggest problem. By the time we'll be able to download 50GB in 10-30 minutes at a reasonable price range, we'll be watching (or at least be on the verge of watching) whatever comes after Blu and will be even bigger. |

wow. this sounds so awesome. 10 min download for a sub-DVD content movie.
one wonders how long it would take to download a BD quality movie. |

Don't forget the set-top rental on top of the monthly service premium, to play those movies...

Yea, that too. Mysterious cutoffs, throttling, and inserting packets into bittorrent transfers. Sign me up for even more comcast!

Assuming an optimistic annual $1800 cost for this Comcast offer, you could instead get a $400 br player and $1400 in br movies for the year?!
![]() ![]() Does anyone wonder if this is the digital download nirvana many hdvd diehards expected as they pass on br because there is no 2.0 player for $200 or less? Every one of them who doesn't sign up with Comcast for this wonderful path into the future should be forced to eat some very stale, dirty crow. ![]() Last edited by Mr. Hanky; 04-04-2008 at 02:42 AM. |
