Thumbs down Comcast High Speed Internet- Yeah Right

After my Comcast service coming and going over the last 3 weeks and a smart-ass phone jockey today, I'm dropping them. Are there any good providers or do they all suck. Asking around at work today most people had Comcast(also hated it), AT&T, or HughesNet. Anybody heard anything good about any of them? I'm afraid if I have to deal with Comcast much longer I might hurt someone.

Not sure where you are and who your phone provider is, but here I get Embarq (Sprint) DSL and it's not bad. I have the 5M package and it's pretty stable. They just upped to a 10M option just recently here, but haven't decided on getting it yet.

$39.95, but since other half works for them, I get a nice monthly credit that brings it down to $14.95. The only choices here where we live are Embarq and Comcast (and that Directv high speed thing that costs an arm and a leg).

I've got comcast too. I'm stuck with it though. I've tried other dsl company's and they are nowhere near comcast but I still don't like comcast. I have them just for internet and it still sucks. Can't wait till fios is out where I live

I have the Verizon Fios Pack with the Internet, Phone, & TV... The Internet is good, I Don't talk on the phone basically, TV...now normally it is really great...but recently they added more channels and re-arranged the 'guide' and there are like a 100 channels that do nothing...they are taking up space because they changed them from what they used to be to some other number...and they havent finished yet or whatever...

AND. The only other thing is that the 'set-top' boxes they give you are absolute crap. the one in my mom's bedroom (I'm 17...) has gone twice, meaning it just stopped working. and it is convenient that at the same time this box is basically defective the bulb in my moms 72" toshiba which the box is hooked up to, blew out...so there goes a $100 something for a new bulb ='(

I so badly want to blame verizon for the bulb on the tv blowing...even though it probably has nothing to do with it....the bulb that was in it previously lasted over a year, the one before lasted 2 years

The Verizon Fios service guy is supposed to come thursday to replace the box, again...

sorry for the rant

Their cable is not that great either, lately the HD channels have been freezing and getting pixelated at times. And you can forget watching anything On Demand. Had their tech out and he said everything checked out, even though I couldn't get an On Demand movie with him standing there. I had an electrician friend help re-terminate all my cable ends and it was no help. I've pretty much decided to go with satellite for my cable, I guess I'll go DSL for my internet and drop them completely. It seems to be what a lot of people around here are doing. It's just a pain because everything was great up until a month ago.

Do me a favor and bring up internet explorer and type in "192.168.100.1" and let me know what your signal levels are. I'll help you out.

Part 1

1. Your "Power Level" is the most important thing in keeping your modem "locked". This number should be below 50, but only needs to be below 58 or so to work. The lower the better. This is commonly called the return signal.

2. Next check your "Received Signal Strength". This number should be between -10 and +10, with 0 being the best. (Same goes for your cable boxes and I can tell you how to check your signal there too!)

3. Now check your BER or Bit Error Rate. This shows your how much error is in your internet connection and can determine your speed. This should be at 0%.

_____________________

Part 2 (Windows)

1. Click "Start"

2. Click "Run" and type "cmd"(If you have Vista you'll have to click Accessories and then click command prompt.)

3. Now that the command prompt is up we'll check another VERY important part. Type "ping -t www.google.com" Your computer will now start to ping Google over and over until you hit "CONTROL + C" buttons at the same time. When pinging make sure to let it run for a couple minutes.

4. Now that you've done a ping test check to see how many packets were sent, and how many were received/lost. You need to have 0% packet loss. <---- If there are ANY packets lost, then there is your problem. This can be 1 of 2 things. Its either the modem itself which is common 90% of the time, OR then its losing packets straight from the tap and a line tech will have to come out because its usually a larger problem, could take days to fix.

5. If there is 0% packet loss then a line tech will have to come out and adjust your speed at the node, pretty easy.

Trust me....I Know what I'm talking about. ;-) Pic of the last speed test I did a couple months ago.

Cheers

Dude in the summer time at my place you're better to have dial-up. I can hardly get on because of the cable wires in the apartment complex and the heat and humidity in Savannah.

-My power level was 57
-my received signal strength was -8
-the bit error rate wasn't listed on the page I was sent to, I'm using a surfboard modem if that helps.

I had 0 packet loss on the ping test.

Thanks for the help.

Alright, so I know now that you signal levels are pretty bad. One thing you want to make sure is that your cable line that the modem is connected to is "dedicated". Example: Meaning if you have 5 cable outlets in the house, you DO NOT use a 6 way splitter. Instead, you would use 2 way splitter going to a 4 way splitter. Same thing if you have only 4 outlets in the house you would use a 2 way splitter and also a 3 way splitter. On a 6 way splitter each output will lost 9dB. So, if you use a 2 way splitter you would take your main incoming signal directly into the 2 way; One output will go DIRECTLY to the modem making it "dedicated" and only losing 3.5dB instead of 9dB; Next you would use the 2nd output of that 2 way splitter to feed either an amplifier OR that 4 way splitter which will power your tv's. You NEVER want to use an amplifier to power your modem!!!

Check to see if your line is "dedicated". If not, then do it.

When/if my power goes out, CDV works fine.
I have Standard Cable TV, HSI(16mbps Blast) and CDV.
All work fine!

This is my wireless laptop, in the living room:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 17244 kbps (2155.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3163 kbps (395.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 24 ms

I'll live.

Yes! They provision the 16mbps service at 17600kbps down and 2200kbps up.

With PowerBoost, one can achieve ~22-35mbps for the first 45-50MB of a download the speed settles to ~17.3mbps - at least mine does.
Upload PowerBoost I get ~3.1mbps for the first 20-25MB then it settles to 2.2mbps.

Wired computer:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 22111 kbps (2763.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3079 kbps (384.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 24 ms

I like it!
It's the fastest internet I can get...

EDIT: Here, this is the speed I get when downloading a bunch of "Research Videos":

17.2mbps sustained...
