Now, no more speculation. I borrowed the new edition from a friend last night and have gotten more than halfway through the feature and checked the new extras. AQ is outstanding. Period. Regrettably, I must say that I'm still less than impressed with the PQ. Granted, a superior encode by far, colours are bright (almost unnaturally so), blacks are inky and no digital artifacts along the lines of aliasing, but I still don't share Brown's outspoken fascination with the transfer; opposite to my expectations, I didn't think it looked much better in motion than those screencaps on here reveal. In my opinion, colours are off, there's black crush and I don't see more detail than before (occasionally, I even see less). Clearly a slight teal push throughout, that I find a bit annoying.
Besides the transfer, I didn't find any of the three new mini-docs particularly worthwhile, possibly the one on the locations was a bit interesting, but I'd say they do not really compensate for the omission of John Little's 100-minute doc that was part of the 2007 edition. So, personally, I am now confidently set on giving this edition a miss, feeling the transfer could have been rendered more 'natural' and with all the really relevant extras already to be found on the 2007 edition that I own. And, warts and all, the old transfer is still the one I prefer, as those jaggies are not all that prominent on my 55" sitting 2-3 meters away. And the AQ on that edition is perfectly sufficient for my set up. EDIT: Oh, that the new transfer is cropped more than before didn't help either. Last edited by Lantz; 06-17-2013 at 07:54 AM. |

I don't like that it was done either...though the two following posts seem to offer explanations as to perhaps why vvv.

Also I was under the impression this forum was open to everyone. Is there a limit on the amount of posts one can make? Don't think so. All you've just said is that your opinion(coupled with others) is right, and his opinion is wrong. Really? |

Re: the cropping, Warners did a similar thing with Superman The Movie. The theatrical cut, being the newer transfer, has been slightly cropped vs the extended version, which used the extant master and was simply re-encoded. And, as with EtD, the grain is more pronounced and has more than a hint of chroma noise to it, though it's all but imperceptible in motion.
Below are two caps by House over at AVS. Head over to his comparison thread if you want to look at any more. theatrical: http://www.imagebam.com/image/e39993136860586 extended: http://www.imagebam.com/image/86b41e136859540 |

So perhaps the Kam & Robson version is the best of all? I already have the 2007 version and these new special features don't mean that much to me, as much as getting a version without cropping, without jaggies and with a brighter look like the Kam & Robson. It's $10 cheaper too.

I was hoping the new WB Blu-Ray would be the one to own, but it isn't. Each edition has major problems. Aliasing on the old WB disc, cropped image on the new one, color and contrast problems on the K&R. The K&R is overly green and in some shots overly contrasty.
I don't own this film on Blu-Ray yet. I'm keeping my DVD edition with Warrior's Journey, and I guess I'll go with the old WB Blu-Ray. Chances are I won't notice the aliasing on my display. I'm sure I can find a cheap used copy. Last edited by Dragun; 06-16-2013 at 06:33 AM. |

I bet you will notice buddy. I own over 1150 blu's and this is the worst. Anything will be better than it, so I'm looking forward to the new release.
