Book 4 A Feast of Crows takes place at the same time as book 3 A Storm of Swords which they couldn't do with a television series (unless we had 2 seasons running at the same time). So it looks like they've more or less treated each one as a different season. It would have been nice to have 20 episodes instead of 10!

I'm not sure what they'll do with the next book (5) as some territories had it as one book while I think we had it split in two.

Actually A Feast for Crows takes place at the same time as A Dance with Dragons (Book 5).

A Storm of Swords was also split into two books in the UK release as well as book 5, which will presumably be fairly similar to how the TV series will pan out.

I think that was one of the reasons for my confusion!

I haven't read the books but know the rough structure (with the overlapping narratives of 4 and 5) and read interviews with the producers about it. It looks like Season 4 will have the rest of 3 (we're about two-thirds into it I believe? Or just over halfway?) and parts of 4 (and maybe 5) with Season 5 combining 4 and 5 with the narratives sticking to the timeline rather than separating the stories. I would assuming that adding 4 and 5 together would mean it would also need to split into season 6 as well (as Surfdude says, 5 is a massive book even before you add in the events of book 4) leaving seasons 7 and 8 for the final two books. Though, of course, no-one knows how big these will be so the producers' recent comments that ten seasons may be too much may be premature as it may end up needing to be that much to fit it all in.

I think the producers have said it won't be one book per season anymore. So if something happens at the same time in different books it will appear on the same TV season.

There were links somewhere in this thread but since its 184 pages now I have no idea where they are and I didn't pay that much attention to it as I haven't read the books

Fine by me. They couldnt go any other way really. I dont think the books (although very addictive!) are that well written and if push came to shove, Id take the TV series over the books.

I disagree, I think they are well written, but they're written very cinematically so there are things that work better on screen. I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses. They work well together - but I don't want to read ahead of the series.

You might change your mind by the time you finish the books that have been written so far...

Maybe so, but I read a heck of a lot of books and I know when one's written well and when one isn't. For me to say a book is badly written it would have to be properly horrific in terms of writing style I guess. A writer who can come up with his own world with its own rules on such a vast scale must be commended - even if he does over-describe food and clothes.

Still waiting on a collector's edition for Season Two (like the Season One set with the dragon egg).

Anyone hear if one is coming?

A decent £34 at Sainsbury's now. That's more like it.

That'll do for me, thanks, I've just put my pre-order in. If it comes up any cheaper (& I don't think it will) it will only be a pound or two, so I'm going to stick with this. I managed to the the season 1 & 2 box for £38 (Tesco), so really not a bad price altogether. A really great series.

Saw this a couple of hours ago so I contacted Amazon to see if this was the bonus disc like seasons 1 & 2.

Here's the reply

Hello Mike,

Thank you for taking my phone call this afternoon.

As we discussed, unfortunately we do not yet know whether the Season Three Blu-Ray collection of Game of Thrones will include a bonus disc.

I contacted our buying team in Slough and received the following reply:

"The limited edition refers to the packaging, details of which we do not have yet to share with customers. We do not at this stage know of any additional content that will be included with this edition".

As soon as we receive more information from the publisher, we will include it in the website description.
So, no details on the disc yet but interesting that they mention the packaging. Hopefully this will be one of the sigils like the US have been getting.
Maybe its the gift set like season 1 but it seems strange that they put season 3 and have missed season 2
