Yes, $15M is nothing ! . But, $50M is quite a lot of money to take off of The Lone Ranger's production budget, and is the amount that they did take off of its production budget. Yes, it absolutely would guarantee a break-even point for The Lone Ranger.

Do you even know what break-even point means? Once again, there are incremental costs that have to be taken into account. I may be wrong about this, but didn't the movie have a Superbowl spot for instance? (Runs up to 4M for 30sec spots. And if they didn't do it, they failed the marketing campaign of this movie even harder than I think they did).
Distribution and marketing costs, on a global scale (trailers have not to be showb in the US only... Speaking for my country: people know as much as The Lone Ranger's presence as they do for 12 Years a Slave, pretty much). Unless you're a cinephile like myself, and look up its trailer, I hardly think many people even know about the movie's existence; and what movie, might some even say? Some sort of Pirates... Being a Western... With Depp being a side-actor or something...

No way in hell the movie's guaranteed to reach it's break-even point with such a budget. It's the kind of worry I'd have IF say Pirates 5 was budgeted at 400M for instance (difference scope, of course)

Yes, it has a superbowl spot from this past February, even an extended superbowl spot if I remember correctly. Of course many people know about the movies existence, because its been a while since the very first trailer for this movie was released, and it is a Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer movie ! Considering that it has the same team behind it that brought us the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, meaning Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski and Hans Zimmer and Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, etc, i'm sure its going to turn out to be a great movie and will do well in the box office . My current box office prediction for this movie is $215-$230 Million domestically. But, I think it might have a hard time going any further then that in the box office in the U.S. when its released to theaters .

Well, remember how well 'Pirates 4' did domestically? As in, it actually was quite disappointing here, bringing in barely of the film's gross? I have a feeling that's going to happen here, but on a worse scale. Sadly, westerns aren't that popular overseas, and that's going to really end up hurting this film in the end, I think. But, this is just my two cents. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

I don't think what happened with Pirates 4 domestically in the U.S., will happen with the Lone Ranger movie because its not Rob Marshall who directed The Lone Ranger. I blame Pirates 4's domestic(U.S.) failure because of Rob Marshall.

You. do. not. get. my. . ... ... ... . .. point.

I do NOT live in the USA. However, the marketing of the movie still has to do its work (unless Disney's aiming solely at a domestic release? ), and so far, it did NOT. No teasers, no trailers, no nothin'. Barely a standee or two inside the theatre.
The general population has no clue who "Gore Verbinski" "Ted Elliot" or "Terry Rossio" are. You do, and I do, that's the difference. So that's not genuine bait to create a fanbase. Hell, so many people do not even care about scripts these days let alone the guy(s) who wrote it.

I saw a TV ad yesterday and the first thing that popped into my mind was Wild Wild West. I hope it's not like that but the TV spot looked to slick for it's own good. In other words it looked like style over substance. I hear there is rumblings over not choosing a native American for the Tonto part.

Or maybe audiences weren't that interested in the movie because it was only mediocre at best. The team's time is fading quickly...If this doesn't do well, this could be the proverbial nail in the coffin for them.

I like a good western, but this one looks like it's gonna really stink.

It's not a western. It's 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5', without the ship and water, and with a six-shooter instead of a flintlock!

Maybe it is or it will eventually and you just haven't found out that its doing its marketing elsewhere besides the U.S. ? I don't think I agree with that what you said about Gore Verbinski and Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio though, because they are part of the team that brought us 3 of 4 of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Yes, they do care about the scripts these days , For example: Why do you think the people at Disney had Jeff Nathanson write the script for the other upcoming Disney/Bruckheimer movie 'Pirates 5', after they didn't like the script for it the first few times it was written by Terry Rossio ?

I'm estimating a $100 million dollar loss (running on the common theory that a movie needs to gross 2.5 x budget to break even)

Sean B. doesn't understand sarcasm, irony or jokes. You can only speak to him in box office figures and clicks. Let me try...

Click click pop...$45 Mill...click pop pop...placed number 2...pop click...behind Smurfs 2...click burrrrrr...doesn't break even...pop...domestically.

There is a 0% chance this hits $200 million in the just the US.

25% chance it will hit $150 million.

50% chance it will hit $100 million.

I'm guessing it will end around $125 million in the US.

As much as we discuss and debate various directors on this site, the general public doesn't care too much about who's behind the camera shouting "action" beyond the big names like Spielberg. Marshall's name would have done nothing to put off people going to see it, and it's likely that audiences just got a bit sick of the series, with the mediocre instalment not helping.
