Subpar in nearly every way. I gave it a 1.5/4. Without Buscemi and Wilde, it would have been a sure 1/4. Now you See Me is leagues better (I reviewed it a couple weeks ago)

My 'Monsters University' Review. Enjoy.

Quote:
It’s been almost twelve years since we were introduced to monsters Mike and Sulley, the heroes of ‘Monsters, Inc.’. There was always rumblings of a sequel after the first film hit, but nothing seemed to come of it…Until now, and not in the way that some have expected. Instead of continuing from where ‘Monsters, Inc.’ left off, Pixar has decided to go back in time to when our heroes meet for the first time, back in their college days, where they were rivals. Of course, viewers already know how the two characters will end up, but seeing their friendship come together, and the events that transpire to get them there, is half the fun. The film is part ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ and ‘Animal House’, while also being part ‘Dead Poets Society’, but Pixar style. Featuring an excellent cast, headlined by returning stars John Goodman and Billy Crystal, ‘Monsters University‘ isn’t quite the movie some were expecting, and that’s a good thing.

Ever since Mike Wazowski was little, he wanted nothing more to be a scarer at Monsters, Incorporated. It was his dream, so when he finally gets his chance to go to college and study to become a scarer, he jumps at the chance. But what Mike wasn’t expecting was to meet the lazy and cocky monster, James P. Sullivan, also known as Sulley. But when their futures become muddled and unclear, the two must work together to make sure they reach their goals, to secure their futures, while unknowingly becoming best friends.

The thing that makes ‘Monsters University’ so good, is the humor and heart that the film has, much like the first. Telling the story of the characters in college though really let Pixar explore an area they had never explored before. The setting has really given Pixar a chance to run wild with crazy college antics, creating things like over the top sororities, insane parties, and crazy rush games. One of the highlights of the film is the different sorority games that all the monsters are involved in. They’re just so insane and hilarious, they show just how inventive the team at Pixar is. The library game, which you briefly see in the trailer, may be the best of the bunch, because it’s truly the most fun and inventive. The added bonus of a giant monster that looks similar to Cthulhu makes is just icing on the cake. On top of all the witty college comedy though, Pixar has managed to make a film that is brimming with heart. Mike and Sulley’s journey to become Scarers at Monsters, Inc. really drives the film. Everyone who ever went to college knows the challenges it creates, especially when it comes to it deciding your future, so that story really hits home. The fact that Mike is willing to go to the extent he is, just to make sure he becomes a scarer, is incredible, and it makes his character’s journey even more amazing. He comes so far, and the way that all of his story wraps up, is not in the normal way you may be expecting, which ultimately makes the film all the better for it. It’s actually refreshing seeing a studio take the chance they did with the story, because many wouldn’t go the route Pixar does here. It just shows how far they’re willing to go to really tug on heart strings and give characters a satisfying journey.

But really, the film’s biggest asset is the cast and characters that they have inhabiting this universe. John Goodman and Billy Crystal are so good in their roles of Sulley and Mike, respectively, that you wouldn’t have known over a decade had passed since they last got to play the characters. While, at their core, the characters are the ones we know and love, Goodman gets the chance to play Sulley just a bit different than before, with a cocky side that the character didn’t really have in the first film. He’s the popular guy in school who gets by on his family name, and Goodman is so good playing the character that way. Crystal has never been better as Mike, and he gets to play the character with so much wide eye wonder and optimism, it makes his character feel so different. He really wants to fight for his dreams and future, and he won’t let anything stand in his way, and Crystal really brings that to life.

The cast is rounded out by some stellar talent, including Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina, Nathan Fillion, Charlie Day, Sean Hayes, and many more, including Steve Buscemi, who returns as Randall Boggs. Pixar always manages to hire top talent, and that’s no exception here. Each of the supporting actors really brings these characters to life, creating some truly memorable supporting players. Fillion, Mirren, and Day all really standout amongst the best of the bunch, mostly because their characters have so much to do throughout the film. Mirren especially is creepy and wonderful as Dean Hardscrabble. She’s such an interesting character, and Mirren plays the character brilliantly. She’s a natural at voice acting, so it would be great to see her do more voice work later.

‘Monsters University’ proves that regardless of Pixar returning to their franchises of yesteryear, they still have what it takes to make a great movie. Full of heart, humor, and great characters, the movie soars to great heights, becoming an excellent companion piece to the first film. The cast is excellent, and with some great nods and cameos from characters from the first film, ‘Monsters University’ reminds us all just why we loved this world to begin with. This is a perfect family film, and it comes absolutely highly recommended. Definitely go see this film.

Yeah, seeing the trailers and TV spots, I kept thinking, this looks so much like Animal House Pixar style. Good to hear that they kept the heart and soul of the characters and humor intact. Good review boss.

Default A Movie A Day: Day 424

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
dir. Wes Anderson
The Good: Stunning. Stunning. Stunning. Masterful and meticulous direction by Wes Anderson. Outstanding ensemble -- Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and Harvey Keitel deliver wonderful performances -- but the standouts are its two young leads, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward. They carry the film and make you fall in love with their characters Sam and Suzy as they fall in love with each other. Gorgeous cinematography, art direction, and costume design. Delightfully eclectic soundtrack comprised of lovely classical compositions by Benjamin Britten, country tunes by legendary singer-songwriter Hank Williams, 60s French pop by Françoise Hardy, and an original score by Alexandre Desplat, who previously collaborated with Anderson for the soundtrack to Fantastic Mr. Fox. Love the entire beach sequence, which perfectly captures the innocence of childhood while having a genuine sweetness to it. "I love you, but you don't know what you're talking about." Great replay value.

The Bad: Nothing major.

The Bottom Line: Like a storybook come to life, this whimsical coming-of-age tale is a fine addition to the genre and is perhaps Anderson's most accessible film to date. Highly recommended.

United Kingdom Maniac (dir. Franck Khalfoun, 2013)

"I see you, too..."

The Good Points: Fresh and innovative depiction of a serial killer -- everything is done POV, in what is possibly one of the most daring approaches to the genre ever. Disgusting in a morbid fascination kind-of way. Much more intelligent than other horror remakes; it makes statements on both voyeurism and the idea of identifying with someone who's mentally unstable. Great performance from Elijah Wood. Some interesting, art-house style cinematography, with some great one-shot sequences. Superb synthesized score. Darkly comic at times.

The Bad Points: Excessive, often unneeded, gore. Are random girls that receptive in real life? I highly doubt it. Very thin on plot.

An unoriginal premise with a ridiculous amount of gore and mutilation, Maniac is saved by an ingenious idea, stylish film-making and an intelligent, eerie and nauseating approach to its material - and proves that there is, indeed, room for innovation in the horror genre.

7/10

Pretty much. I was never that big of a Wes Anderson fan (had only seen two of his films prior to Moonrise Kingdom), but now I'm going to watch as many of his as I can after watching Moonrise Kingdom.

First time review well not a review but yea sorry lol so go easy on me. Im just reposting what i put on the OGF thread.

Only God Forgives

Yea it was great, really great night.

Ok, im the kind of guy that has to let the film sink in to my brain lol i have to think about it and reflect on it, watch it again to really see if i enjoyed it as much as i thought my initial viewing. I did this with Drive, first time i seen it i didn't love it but i thought it was really great, loved the music and all, i thought about it afterwards and i really seemed to appreciate it more after thinking about it.

Anyways back to my point, now that ive let this sink in for a night, talked about it with a co worker and really thinking about the film im beginning to appreciate it more. I really really enjoyed this, yes its very different from Drive but on its own it really is something great.
The look of the movie, all those colors! My god it really was stunning, the score was really great. Acting wise i thought like everyone else that Kristen scott thomas was the best one here, vithaya was great as chang, u really fear him as how Julian seemed to fear him. Ryan was great too, you felt his emotion just with the stares and expression on his face, u really see that he's had a ****ed up life and this woman who pretty much comes and ruins the little paradise he has found in Thailand especially im sure away from her has comeback and is about turn this place into a real nightmare once chang gets involved.

The karaoke scenes were not bad a little weird a first not gonna lie lol but it did fit the film. The violence wasnt over the top but it was brutal. The fight scene between chang and julian was great, it was actually not disappointing especially with the score just made this seemed epic.
Overall i still just really liked it not loved it but at least i can say this was not a terrible film, well imo anyways and i enjoyed it for what it was, i agree with awesome sauce about not overhyping this especially with Drive, u will b disappointed, i was a little not gonna lie but because i still had Drive in my head on how this film was going to b. Just go in with an open mind, leave Drive at home lol and youll really enjoy this.

Drive is a 10/10 for me so this is more like a 7.5/8-10

Because I am a disgusting male pig, who objectifies women, I need to know which actress is the nude in the pic? Or is that a mannequin?

Oh, it's a mannequin But it can be a real woman if you want it to be, Squid

There are enough naked women in the film itself to sate your desires, though

I can understand why you were skeptical of the score -- hell, even I am when I see it up there -- but it was just some serious fun. There were no ulterior motives in the film besides funny one-liners and to just provide the razzle-dazzle of the Las Vegas circuit, and it did just that. Plus, Carrey was perfect in it.

I know, it's such a shame. The Sopranos was amazing, and it's terrible that it's at such a young age.
