With special features the word "inferior" can change from person to person. In that respect, I don't see this as an inferior release at all, since I don't care about IME or special features; I only watch deleted scenes if I'm bored. The only time I would see "inferior" as being proper is when they give HD-DVD a lossless audio solution and not us. Also, BD is inferior, not to HD-DVD, but to what it could be on BD, w/ a higher bitrate codec.

Also, Del, nice usage on the abbreviations!

I have no real interest in the film (just in the disparity between the releases across the formats), but I would be very concerned that by buying a film I liked on Blu-ray that was missing features that appeared on the HD-DVD release, I would effectively be saying to Warners "just go ahead and treat your BD customers with disdain".
I don't quite see it this way. They have been releasing inferior products (omitting losless audio tracks on BD), but they are holding back key titles because of IME. So if (and only then) the early BD release is o.k. with PQ AND AQ this could give just the right sign to Warner: give us the movies with the best possible quality now, add the fancy goodies later for a double dip (that will follow anyway) later.

Surely when one release has everything and the other only has a proportion of those extras, "inferior" is a fair description. There's little doubt that in terms of content, the HD-DVD will be superior in this instance.

And when the war is done for, the Warner BD realeases will be optimixed for BD50s with higher VC-1 bitrates and DolbyTHD as Warner will want to win the HTF best studio awards

No. I buy High Definition formats to get 35mm High Definition video which I couldn't get with 16mm DVD. If i bought movies to watch extras I'd buy DVDs, which overflow with them.

The point of High Def video is High Def video. not extras. we had those already.

Excellent shilling impersonation. You've got a good thing going in a pretty decent number of your posts around here.

Like I said, for me, both releases are equal, in a sense. I am aware that HD-DVD will have more special features for this movie, but since I don't care about them, it's not inferior to me. It would be inferior if the PQ and AQ were worse than the HD-DVD, because that's all I care about.

Most people say leather is better when buying a car, making cloth "inferior." But what if you buy a car with a cloth interior because you don't like leather, is it inferior to you? It doesn't enhance the performance of the car, it's a luxory, like special features, that's why they're called "supplemental materials." The movie does not have to have them.

Not really - only the manufacturers can place "value" to the extras (ie make us pay more for it). Now since the manufacturers don't include it on one format and include it on another, yet price both formats the same - the manufacturers acknowledge that the "value" of this "extra" content is zero, thus the value lies where it should - THE MOVIE!

So the inferior vs superior because of "extras" argument is very weak.

This is exactly what many claim to want so should be interesting. If the IME-less BD outsells the HD DVD version that will be huge.

The fact though that Warner is releasing the BD a month earlier demonstrates in no uncertain terms exactly what sort of two-faced opportunists they are.

All other issues aside..
Why June 5th?

Why a date with 12 other titles to compete with?

It makes absolutely no sense to me unless of course WB's marketing department is based in Redmond...It's almost like they're trying to convince the brass that BD isn't worth it, by encouraging weak sales.

If they do the audio an injustice I won't be touching another WB title until Blade Runner hits, and even then I'll send my dog to buy it.

So everyone be sure to buy Blood Diamond on this date and if they cannot affording buy additional titles at the same time - delay those.....

Default Warner finally releasing Blood Diamond on both formats

The good news:

- It's comining out on both formats, with Blu Ray arriving first

The bad news:

- Blu Ray version is shortchanged in terms of extras and "IME" capabilities

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news...ay,_HD_DVD/583

I guess this is at least positive in that Warner may no longer be holding back titles due lack of Blu Ray player support for the to-be-mandated hardware profiles, but it is still discouraging that we're missing all the extras.

If Sony was smart, they'd get out a clear statement on 1.1/2.0 profile support on their products (e.g. the PS3) and get out a leading edge disc of their own to show what Blu Ray can do.
