[Show spoiler]The fact that they thought it was better to have her choose nobody over one of the two was bad. Granted originally it was supposed to be William Hurt's character, but somebody on the crew screwed it up. They still should have tried to make it work.
A shame too since everything else about it was pretty good.
I actually think the ending works well. To me, it wouldn't make sense had she made a different choice from what she does.

I thought that Alain Delon's acting in Le Samouraï was superb. I love the moments where we can see his calm exterior start to crumble as the walls close in tighter. There's also a rather heartbreaking scene where he sits at the bar and stares at Cathy Rosier's pianist character with a forlorn expression that makes us imagine everything that is going through his mind.

I've changed my mind for a week now. I originally said I was skipping the B&N sale since I bought so much during the Amazon sale. Looks like I have a short list again. I'm definitely picking up Sanjuro/Yojimbo & blind buying the Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. Can't decide between Modern Times, Devil's Backbone, or Island of Lost Souls

I revisited Modern Times this weekend, so I'd encourage you to go for it. Island of Lost Souls is pretty terrific as well, though, and it's perfect if you liked the Universal horror movies from back then and want a cool Paramount feature to go alongside them.

They tend to be pretty late in the afternoon these days. They often come around 5pm EST time, give or take an hour or so.

Thanks, Owl. I've never actually seen The Devil's Backbone but it seems to be a favorite Del Toro amongst most.

Wish they'd just go the Warner route and put up a disclaimer before the film stating they were a product of their times. No one *****ed about their old non-pc cartoons.
They're even going as far as releasing the famous censored 11 soon!
And ironically, they have no problem with Peter Pan, which is racist as shit.

I bought The Devil's Backbone on DVD several years ago, shortly after I got hugely into Pan's Labyrinth. I loved the movie upon first viewing, but I fell out of love with it later on and eventually sold the DVD.

I thought about grabbing the Criterion Blu-ray of The Devil's Backbone and give it another chance, but I simply have no inclination to revisit the movie, and I don't think that the Criterion logo on the spine will redefine the film for me.

It's a pretty cool little horror flick for those of you who have never seen it before, though.

Criterion updated their website with a Robert Benchley page, so it looks like I Married A Witch is definitely coming October! http://www.criterion.com/people/121168

Edit: People on CriterionForum apparently found some phantom pages and one of them will be for "The Uninvited" (1944).

Edit 2: Apparently La Notte is 100% coming according to the private eyes on CForum.

I like Pan's Labyrinth a little better, although I eventually fell out of love with that film as well for some reason. A lot of Guillermo del Toro fans prefer The Devil's Backbone, though, and it is a more focused film in a way.

When I was a kid, I used to have these nightmares that a giant toad in the backyard was trying to get into the house to get me. The scene in Pan's Labyrinth with the toad absolutely disturbed the hell out of me and made me remember all of those nightmares. That's the main reason why I consider it to be a more effective movie, but your mileage may vary.

Funnily enough, I was angry at the time when Pan's Labyrinth lost the Best Foreign Language Academy Award to The Lives of Others. I quickly did a 180 spin when I actually saw The Lives of Others, though, because that's a vastly superior film.

Yup, I Married A Witch, La Notte, and The Uninvited are definitely coming.

This would be a great time for the rumored Antonioni box set to be announced. First L'Avventura gets remastered for the big screen and now La Notte comes out?

Ah, The Uninvited. I remember renting the VHS from a local library a few years ago. I didn't watch it all, but I liked what I saw.

Crossing my fingers and toes for Eraserhead (and maybe even Mulholland Dr.)!

I believe Andrei Rublev is going through a major restoration. First we will probably see theatrical runs leading up to Blu ray release.
