Yeah, you could probably throw in countless westerns in there (Searchers).

One things for sure: Wide Angle landscape shots are great. I could watch any widescreen Western for this reason alone.

Walkabout is a great Australian film but nothing in that film reminds me of Kubrick at all. The swimming hole/oasis scene was my favorite in the film though. I really love the subtexts in the film regarding the clash between man's disrespect of nature vs. the opposite (in the character David Gulpilil played). There are some really bizarre scenes in there though that only a Nicholas Roeg film could have. The strange scene with the scientists and the weather balloon and the sexual innuendo did not make much sense to me. Also the acting was not very convincible regarding the father's suicide. But the cinematography is a sight to behold.

Here is my just updated list of top 10 favorite Criterion films. It's not as exciting as others but let me know what you think.

After all the excitement over Monsieur Verdoux this thread has seen the past week, I decided to make mine priority. I thought I was crazy in believe the film had a very Hitchcockian feel to it, but Claude Chabrol reinforced that in his interviews from Chaplin Today. I absolutely loved the film, which I wasn't expecting after finding The Great Dictator to be weaker than almost all Chaplin's silents. What do you guys think the next Chaplin will be? Does Criterion own the rights to his entire body of work?

I've got ten or so titles left on my 'really want' list for this B&N round but while I'm not really a big Chaplin fan (I know, I know) Monsieur Verdoux is kind of moving up.

As for the next one, I'm hoping for City Lights just so I can cross it off my AFI list.

Barnes & Noble My Barnes & Noble haul for July 21, 2013

My 5th haul was an utter success!

And one of my favorite ones yet!

I went to one of my top B&N stores and the nice British CSR was working there today. I tried to use the 15% coupon again but its one-time use only (I used it already last week). I used my trustworthy $5 off $50 coupon on 4 titles splitting it equally an extra $1.25 off each title.

Fish Tank (BD) $16.74 ($5 Coupon + 10% Member discount)
Crumb (BD) $16.74 ($5 Coupon + 10% Member discount)
Things to Come (BD) $16.74 ($5 Coupon + 10% Member discount)
My Dinner With Andre (DVD) $16.74 ($5 Coupon + 10% Member discount)

I only have 6 or 7 more titles to go until I'm done with this sale.

Here's a picture I shot of this haul.

Watching The Blob right now with the commentary by Jack Harris. Interesting track so far. This is one of my favorite Criterions that I've seen, even with a small amount of special features.

The Blob is fun, but it's near the bottom for me...and I like silly B-movies too

I didn't really like it, but there are far more cult films that are worse. Take Brazil for example - huge fan base and nothing spectacular (minus the creative sets).

safety last
lord of the flies
the seventh seal
robinson crusoe on mars

Unfortunately, I can't afford them all and would love some help weeding through. As a reference, I'm rather new to these more "artsy" films, but really enjoyed Island of Lost Souls, 39 steps, Blob, Cronos, The Grapes of Wrath, 12 Angry men and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Maybe list your top 5 if your interested...

Thanks!
My recommendations in bold.

Nah, cause then the power of Orson's eyes will be diminished. Can't do something like that. However, I might play around with the pic and add something else.

The Blob and Brazil are two of the rare examples where I've gotten rid of Criterion films. The latter I really did not like, while I just knew I would get nothing more out of The Blob and ended up trading it in a deal that involved the UK David Lynch set and Carlos, both of which I was much more excited about.

I'm shocked too, how can you not like Brazil? Then again, I don't like Jean-Luc Godard's work.

I haven't gotten rid of any Criterions, but if I did decide to do so, there's a lot I'd want to take out of my collection.

I hated Brazil, I could not finish it, I thought it was very terrible.

I wish I knew if I liked Brazil or not, but I've owned it since December and still haven't had the desire to open it yet.
