Well, I tried to force myself to like it and eventually I have come to a newfound appreciation especially after seeing this on Blu-ray. The quality of the Criterion transfer is stunning.

On the matter of Gilliam, I really would love to see The Fisher King on a Criterion BD. I have a feeling this is going to happen. The 2011 BD release by Image Entertainment had no supplements and the PQ wasn't the best. I think this is a perfect candidate for a Criterion upgrade! (the film was once available on Criterion LD - Laserdisc).

Who else wants The Fisher King on Criterion Blu-ray? Say yes!

I loved Drive after one viewing but it's flaws and lack of any real depth really became apparent in a second viewing. Hanna on the other hand, I just flat out hated on first viewing. Awful, empty film.

Is it a Summer Movie or a Winter Movie?

It's so weird, I haven't been in the mood for serious cinema lately. I could probably watch another 50 '80's romantic comedies before I finally check out The Life of Oharu or The Sacrifice

I'm getting rid of my Eyes Without a Face DVD tomorrow.
...because the Blu-ray is coming out soon.

I'm actually taking quite a few of my remaining DVDs to the used store tomorrow, and almost splitting my DVD collection in half. I'm keeping the Criterions yet to be upgraded (Le Samourai, Bob Le Flambeur, Le Doulos, Carnival of Souls, The Vanishing, Touchez Pas Au Grisbi, etc. etc. etc.) and a few other choice selections, but kicking a bunch of other movies to the curb since I don't see myself watching them frequently anytime in the future. I've been holding on to my Universal Horror Legacy Collection DVD sets, for instance, but decided recently that I rarely revisit any of the sequels anyway, and, when I'm in the mood for Universal Horror, I generally watch the main movies that I have on the Blu-ray set.

Haha I get like that too. The easiest way for me to lose the desire to watch serious cinema of an actual movie at all is if I start watching a season of television or worse yet, have a marathon of multiple seasons. After I'm done, it takes me a while to get back in the mood to actually sit down and watch a movie all the way through.

I'm a bit like that at the moment since I just finished a dexter marathon (all 7 seasons and the currently aired episodes of the final season).

It's not that serious. Ok, the subject matter is very serious, but the viewing experience was...uh...'breezy'. Yeah, sure, I like that word. Plus, it's very good, which obviously helps. I'm not selling it very well, am I?

I'm with you, though, I'm not in the mood for films as often as tv shows these days.

I'll admit to replacing and paying for a few of their earlier digipack releases with standard cases, but I would continue to buy them. I probably wouldn't buy as many, and might only select my absolute favorites, but digipacks wouldn't stop me.
I would still buy them. I kind of see why people don't like them (I have Dazed and Confused and it's annoying that there's nowhere for the booklet to go) but it's not a deal breaker.

Cool. I'm not sure how serious many would consider it, but I re-watched Dancer in the Dark without a hitch yesterday. So I watch them the same, it's just a bit harder to put them in the player. Maybe my stack of Blindbuys (about 80+) is too tall. I end up picking the "lighter" ones, so I don't need to fully commit. It feels great watching a film you know is gonna be outstanding without the burden of knowing you have dozens of other flicks to get through.

I have fun either way, so ultimately it's not much of an issue.

I've been riding a huge wave of "classic acclaimed cinema" lately, thanks to the recent Criterion purchases and such. Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Powell/Pressburger, Fritz Lang, etc. I've never been one to place much regard in the IMDB Top 250 movie list, but I did notice recently that about 75% of the movies that I've revisited during the past month appear on that list.

Actually, the eight months or so have been a lot like that, because I've been building up my "all killer, no filler" Blu-ray collection of favorite films while finally grabbing a few previously-unseen greats from Criterion, Olive, and Twilight Time.

My viewing fare over the last several months has been almost like a film school course, but I'm also having a blast. These films do not feel like "homework", and that's why I chose to upgrade a lot of them from old DVD copies.

I've seen other Mizoguchi films, so I kind of know what to expect. Sounds like the perfect bad weather movie.

Seriously though, it's crazy that CC does not have any 80's high school/college comedies.

I'd rather tackle Miami Vice for a 6th or 7th time than rewatch twenty minutes of Hanna.

I'd love for Criterion to release Some Kind of Wonderful. That's my favorite of the John Hughes productions, and it's slightly off the middle of the road as far as those 1980s teen films go, which makes it perfect for the Collection.

The concept never interested me, I only bought them to be a completist.

Plus, I've seen similar films to several of those films that I have listed. For example, Tokyo Drifter and Branded To Kill seem rather similar, and I really disliked Tokyo Drifter.
