But why include the DVD at al - it's not like they always do every time. So you'll only have a few titles anyways that are on DVD, while most are blu-ray only. Any time you buy a box set of movies or a tv series you're not getting everything on DVD also, you just get the blu-ray discs. So then why have some random films with DVDs? It still drives up the cost of the release. I'd rather save a couple dollars and skip a disc I'll never need. It's like buying a CD soundtrack but getting a cassette included too and making you have to pay for it.

I don't think it makes a difference. Hanna and Paul both came out in fall 2011 for about the same price, but Hanna didn't come with a DVD. Technically, you're spending more money when you don't get a DVD.
All the new movies I've bought without a DVD are usually the same price if not more expensive than the DVD Combo packs I've seen. Plus, most people don't mind at all. You may not like getting the DVD, but you can always buy the single disc edition from Wal-mart for most major movies. |

I like having the DVD in the combo pack for the simple fact that I literally know no one (except my one uncle) who has upgraded to Bluray yet. It's a sad fact but if my friends or family borrow a movie they always ask for the DVD and how it looks good enough to them so they don't need to upgrade.

Del Toro has made comments that there won't be an extended version, but there will be tons of deleted scenes.

This movie was ****ing awesome! You might have to stifle a chuckle or two at the cheesiness a couple of times, the story is cookie-cutter, but the actors take it just the right amount serious to make it a lot of fun, and the special FX and creature design is unlike anything I have ever seen.
I saw it the other night in AVX 3D and I'd say it's the most "need to see it in a theater" movie since Avatar. I don't even know if it's worth buying to watch in 2D on my 50" plasma. It would lose a lot of what I liked about the experience. |

That, and it wasn't marketed as well as it could have been. Also, I think a lot of people are still a little burned from the last Transformer films and what I hear was the abysmal Battleship. I think people may be clumping Pacific Rim together with those, which is a shame, because it's better than all those films put together.

People need to stop listening to "pro" reviews and forum critics for starters. If I judged all my film viewings on internet reviews, I would have missed some great films, like "Knowing", which was pummeled by most critics, and only got a 17% on RottenTomatoes, yet Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars. Personally I loved it. Moon got very little exposure and I heard nothing about it until I stumbled onto a mention of it online. I'm so glad I saw that one in the theatre (I had to drive out of state to find a theatre that was playing it), because it was one of the best sci-fi films I'd seen in years. People need to go with their instincts. If it looks interesting to you, give it a chance. Pacific Rim was said to have been a highly-anticipated title, yet even with all the great reviews, it bombed. I know high ticket priced don't help, and there's a lot of other big films this summer, and people can't afford them all. I think part of it is just more and more people are skipping the theatre and pre-ordering the blu-ray instead. I have a 3D HDTV, and a very nice surround system. But money is tight - the tv is financed and it will take 3 years to pay off. I can't afford the theatre tickets at $13 x 2 every time my girlfriend and I want to see a film. And Pacific Rim is already out for pre-order on Amazon. For the cost of the 2 tickets, we could have waited 10 days and then placed the pre-order and then we'd own it in a few months, and if we hated it, we could even trade in the blu-ray for a few bucks, which you can't do with theatre tickets if you hate the film. I think the expensive ticket prices combined with quick blu-ray releases are hurting ticket sales. People are just being very picky over which films they will see in theatres. Then again, people went to see Adam Sandler's film instead, so I don't know what to make of that. Last edited by mar3o; 07-24-2013 at 07:41 PM. |
