This move was pretty huge in scale. For once it wasn't just hype. And why do you say that it was being marketed as the next Star Wars? I don't see that as the case at all.

Yeah I've seen comparisons to Independence Day and some people compared the special effects to Jurassic Park... But I haven't heard anyone say it was this generation's Star Wars.

I am seriously close to pre-ordering the 3D version. Is it worth a blind buy? I am a Del Toro fan (Hellboy movies are two of my favorite comic/graphic novel adaptions). Also, I am a big sci-fi nut, so this has looked like it's right down my alley. Sure I could rent it from redbox first when it comes out, but I am thinking about just skipping the mididle man and just buying this sucker.

I thought about ID4 when they
[Show spoiler] . Now that I think about it, it does have other similarities too: Humanity facing obliteration, alien invasion, nations joining together, hotshot pilot(s) being the only hope, military reduced to a resistance force, nearly invincible foe, massive alien weapons platforms, epic city destruction as a primary alien strategy, the [Show spoiler] families torn apart, goofy-fun scientists, the ultra-serious leader, heroic speech before the final battle, and so on.I like it better than ID4 thou. Man, nobody wants to watch movies anymore unless the characters are ultra-realisitc.
You're reading into this movie too much, man. It's about robots fighting monsters. Laurence of Arabia it ain't. I had a great time with it. |

If you are referring to me. I love transformers AND battleship, but this movie just did not connect with me. Look at my collection, I like deep movies BUT I also like mind-numbing eye-candy action flicks too. I'm just describing my experience so that another member doesn't do a "blind-buy" with high expectations and also feel disappointed. It felt like Del Toro was trying to be Michael Bay but missed the mark. If you go into it expecting Del Toro or Michael Bay, I feel you will walk away wondering who directed this one. It doesn't fit with either of them.

![]() Maybe that's where our distinctions lie then. I don't care for the Transformers films or Michael Bay. Last edited by BouCoupDinkyDau; 07-27-2013 at 05:05 AM. |

Yeah, some people just don't get it. It features exactly the type of characters it wanted to - it is based on Japanese-style robot/creature features. I think Del Toro did a commendable job, and I can't imagine it being any more entertaining.

It's worse than Geordi reversing the polarity on something to get the Enterprise out of its jam of the week. ![]() Last edited by BouCoupDinkyDau; 07-27-2013 at 05:17 AM. |

It was a little weird to see Rinko Kikichi play such an innocent character after some of her other roles like her character in Norwegian Wood and the hit woman in Map of the Sounds of Tokyo (in which she never smiles, and has fairly explicit sex in what looks like a subway car but is really a love hotel). She at least stood out to me - I had a little trouble telling the bland white guys apart in this movie. I did enjoy watching it, but I didn't think it was particularly memorable aside from the special effects.
