Talk about a delayed reaction...
As I've watched the Criterion Blu-ray of 3:10 to Yuma and the Twilight Time Blu-ray of The Big Heat, I've been trying to figure out why Glenn Ford looked so familiar. I never got around to looking up his filmography, though. I just realized that Glenn Ford played Superman's father (well, Earth stepfather), Pa Kent, in Superman: The Movie. I'm surprised that I did not figure that out sooner, but better late than never. |

im using a tool now for my browser that lets me use Hulu in germany . this way i cant change the quality settings and other stuff so everything is on "auto". do i get best possible settings now or will i be able to get higher video quality if i sign up for a hulu+ account? 7,99$ a month seems pretty fair ! and is this "1 week free trial" safe to try or is this something like all the "you didnt cancel early enough, now you have to pay for a full year" stuff? ![]() OK it looks like wont be able to use hulu+ without buying a virtual US mastercard for ~40$ only to get a 25$ hulu+ gift card? so i have a normal mastercard / paypal and nothing will work? I had some problems cancelling a free trial in time; I e-mailed the company, and they happily canceled and refunded. So they're legit. ![]() Quote:
Not sure one normal Mastercard would be a problem if you were thinking of cancelling before billing, but then, I'm not sure how these work overseas. Pretty sure they don't take Paypal, though. Last edited by EricJ; 08-04-2013 at 05:54 PM. |

M*A*S*H - best Altman film ever. (To paraphrase the guy I was sitting next to at work for about a year, not all that long ago. (Hi Bharath, hope you're enjoying watching The Dark Knight Returns on your iPhone for the umpteenth time.)) Though admittedly I still have a few Altmans left to see yet. And admittedly have not watched it but maybe once since it first came out. |

I watched La Strada last night and really enjoyed it. It might be my favorite of Fellini's that I've seen. Hopefully it comes out on Blu-Ray soon.
Scorsese's interview on the film is interesting too. It's always great to hear him talk about a great film. |

His conversation with Kent Jones on On The Waterfront is fantastic. One of my favorite supplements Criterion has put together.

Just watched my Concorde BluRay of Mulholland Drive for the fourth time and while I am very pleased with it, there is definitely room for improvement. I'm sure Criterion will knock it out of the park with their transfer. I hope we get an announcement sometime this year.

La Strada is a wonderful film, and probably Fellini's most accessible. My first encounter with it was Criterion's laserdisc. Their DVD of it is still in print, so they must still own the rights. It would be certainly be nice to see this on Blu.

I thought they looked fine. Both versions, really enjoyed them a lot.
(Was really just glad to finally see them a couple years ago: I recall it playing back in the day first run on public television (I think even before it was called PBS), tiny b&w tv (on which I also saw many an episode of Monty Python), didn't really watch it though, a few scenes maybe, at the time just thought it looked a little interesting, would be nice to maybe see some day. 35 years later, mission accomplished.) |

or BELLADONNA OF SADNESS: would be a few good animated titles to start with on blu. Also, if Criterion ever got a hold of the ROBOCOP rights again, this would make for a potentially good cover: ![]() Last edited by Monroville; 08-05-2013 at 01:38 AM. |

I watched The Thin Red Line today.
"I can handle anything you throw at me, because I'm twice the man you are." I watched this film about ten years ago, age fifteen, and I remember at the time I was expecting something analogous to Saving Private Ryan. Boy was I wrong. I was dissatisfied with the lack of plot, and could hardly decode what the narration was even talking about. Fast forward to today. I know Malick's reputation precedes him, so I went into The Thin Red Line again with an open mind. I told myself I was going to force my eyes open, Clockwork Orange style, and process what I'm seeing to formulate an honest opinion. Well this time, the movie blew me away. I don't see it as a war movie or an action movie, I see it as two things: a juxtaposition of nature and the violence that destroys harmony, and a frightening look into how savagery and violence eats away at the human soul. The first part of the film, where Witt is AWOL with the natives, for example, is our initial dose of nature and utopia. We're interrupted with a war ship passing by, and then we're thrown into the midst of the battle of Guadalcanal just minutes later. We follow several characters throughout the film, and it gets deep. I won't say much more, but I would recommend taking a second look at this film if your initial viewing was like mine. As for the Criterion Blu, as many of you may know, this one is absolutely gorgeous. The artwork is stellar, and the pamphlet included is about as big as the case will allow. Excellent package. |

This is one of my favorite all-time quotes from any movie. I often think of this quote anytime I'm feeling miserable and jaded in a city surrounded by noise pollution, air pollution and human pollution. I think of running away to some South Pacific island like the one featured in The Thin Red Line, early on in the film, and escape from society. This is just one of the reasons I love this film. I love the whole juxtaposition of man vs. nature. The film is brilliant in how it disguises itself as a war film but is really an existential film about the human condition. The sheer wisdom in this film far exceeds that of most films these days. The poetry of the voiceover in many of the scenes from the characters is an amazing technique that Terrence Malick perfected for this film. There is simply no better use of voiceover in any other film that I've ever seen. The cast is amazing. The music is amazing. The editing is amazing. Everything just comes together in this one. ![]() |
