Great month. I'm in for City Lights (my favorite Chaplin), Frances Ha (my favorite film of 2013 so far) and Tokyo Story (one of the best!). My only complaint is that I wish these had come out in November so I could buy them during the B&N sale! But hopefully they line up with the 40% off all Blu Rays sale.

I can't justify a blind buy of the Zatoichi set - Can anyone recommend a good one to try before I buy? Is it best to start at the start, or it there a better entry point?
I blind-bought this Zatoichi DVD set many years ago:

Which included:

Zatoichi - The Festival of Fire
Zatoichi At Large
Zatoichi In Desperation
Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman
Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo
Zatoichi's Conspiracy
Zatoichi the Outlaw

I really liked them all, but my favorite is Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo. Perhaps because it stars Mifune, but also I just enjoyed the story more than the others Mifune's character is similar to what you see in Kurosawa's Yojimbo and Sanjuro. It was certainly riding on its coattails as you can see from the title.

The Zatoichi movies I've seen all have a very similar feel to them, so I think you'd be safe watching any of them. They're a bit campy/silly at times, and aren't meant to be taken too seriously.

"City Lights" = This Announcement is a non debatable Win

I may be in for "Tokyo Story" as well, but the only time I've watched it before it was a battle for me just to get through it... And I love long films, as well as Japanese Cinema.

Maybe I was just distracted/in a bad mood at the time. Can't remember. Would have prefered "Ikiru" though.

I have no, i repeat no use for a DVD of a film if there is a Blu.

I went in with high expectations and loved it! My favorite NYC film since Manhattan.

I like Girls; I think comparisons of Frances Ha to it are really lazy and generalized.

Good month.. not their best. I can't really complain. I've been wanting a new Ozu for the longest time.
They did

Eh...it kind of has a Girls vibe to it, but I didn't really see any resemblance too much. Then again, I haven't really sat down to watch Girls...

It is his Best Film... In my very strong opinion.

The last 10 Minutes are "Pure Cinema" defined.

Has there ever been another movie that went from theater straight to Criterion? Surprised that Frances Ha was on the list.

Nothing for me this month. Have to learn to stop getting excited. The boxset does look pretty cool though.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

A few thoughts on November's releases:

-OHMYGOD CITY LIGHTS AND TOKYO STORY!!!!

-Interesting that they are doing combo packs now. I guess the DVDs aren't selling well enough anymore compatible to Blu-Ray.

-Wow, that box set!

-No Lynch but oh well

-I'm interested in seeing Francis Ha
