Prior to the update, yes via optical. Via HDMI, it'll decode the DTS CORE.

In ALL DTS audio streams, the DTS Core is there. The DTS Core is augmented by additional data packets to make up the lossy DTS-HD HR. There is still debate over how DTS HDMA is encoded - is it like DTS-HD HR or is it DTS HDMA + DTS Core.

Thanks for the info. I went and tested afew more blus (Saw III, First Blood, and just to add a control factor Sleep Hallow, and The Untouchables). All the LG BDs are outputting DTS HD MA (6.1 for Saw III, 5.1 for First Blood) at 3.0mbps, while the 2 Paramount titles outputted their posted audio tracks (DTS 5.1, and DTS:ES 6.1 - both at 1.5mbps). The bit I listened to of The Devil's Rejects definitely sounded better than I remember previously (at double the bitrate, I imagine there should be a noticeable difference), and I'm pretty sure that it was not outputting 6.1 before the firmware update.

The mighty world of EBAY, the seller was call called wesellcoolstuff. including delivery and import charges the full cost was around £300, still around £100 cheaper than most places in the UK. You will also need a 100watt US - UK power converter. I got mine from maplin.

I'd wager it was a misprint, being that not only does the track output at 7.1 PCM, but you have to select the normal DD 5.1 track at the menu screen to get it (at least that's how my copy behaves).

P.S.: This may come off as a "noob" question, but when a movie outputs 6.1 audio to a 7.1 receiver setup (Onkyo 605 here), does the back surround channel get split btw the back left and right, or does it not output at all?

Now I'm getting confused.

Can you get DTS-HDMA over Optical cable with PS3 (or do you have to use HDMI)?

No, you need an HDMI. But if you select a DTS MA track from the blu ray menu, it will still decode to the CORE DTS track of 5.1 surround.

Default I'm getting 7.1 on Pan's Labyrinth AND audio MBS is...

up around 7.1 at it's peak rate....
I was a little skeptical of some of the claims of 7.1 Mbs since when I put in I Robot, all I was getting was peaks of 5.7 up to maybe 5.8. It's possible it hit higher, but I didn't see it.
With Pan, it hit the 7.1 on a scene during the rain storm for one.
The big thing I noticed is bitrate peaks are in direct proportion to what is going on during audio, which makes sense!
When there is not much to stress sound, you can drop down to 3.0 or so, but during action scenes, or scenes where there is a lot going on, it goes nuts!
As for people saying they are not getting 7.1 channels on AVS, all I can say is Pan's L output into 7.1 no problem on my setup.
I run a PS3 with my Onkyo 805 and a 46" Sony XBR4...
The PS3 says it is running 7.1, and all the correct speaker displays are active on my front panel of the Onkyo. I can also hear full ambient sound coming from the rear channels.
The big thing is, while it is not ALWAYS awe-inspiring, at times it is bliss!
I am hearing stuff I never heard before, the sound is clearer than I ever imagined, and it is indeed sweet. There are moments of pure heaven my friends. I have not had time to watch an entire movie, I've just jumped around with various titles.
I Robot was incredible. Action scenes are something.
Even the start sounds of a movie, the logo of the studio and the onrush of the studios entry music is so much deeper.
And Pan has moments where you are almost looking around the room in amazment wondering if you are really hearing what you are hearing.
The incredible part is, you are!
It isn't a dream, this thing is working!
Have I ever said I loved my PS3 on this forum?
If I have not, let me say it now!
This machine is the most amazing thing I have ever owned!
Pure bliss!
If it gets any better, I won't be able to stand it!!!!
Thank you Sony! Thank you!!!!

Default v2.3 not available in U.S. (yet)

I just checked the Sony firmware page for the U.S. (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/SystemUpdate) and it still shows version 2.20. I downloaded it thinking maybe they just didn't update the Web page, but the file size is exactly the same which means v2.3 isn't available in the U.S. yet.

Hopefully later today...

Im a bit confused some posts say you can only get the new codecs if you use HDMI yet others say no you can get through an optical cable as long as your receiver can output pcm. I have a 5.1 Sony ES system with the PS3 connected optical out since it does not have a HDMI connection. I was getting up between 3 to 7.5 mbps on blu-ray movies showing up on the ps3 display before this update and all the movies just had more impact louder and clearer sound. I see no differane with this update, does that mean I was all ready getting the DTS Master audio or is the PS3 display just misleading? My receiver does handle pcm could that be why? If someone can help me understand this I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Not sure why it's not on their webpage yet, but I had my PS3 search for it and it found 2.30 immediately.

Die Hard 4.0 is quieter with DTS HD MA, straight from the opening Fox title it lacks the punch and power. Does anyone know why this is? Has anyone else experienced this?
I watched the third and that was NOTICEABLY more loud my tv was on 11-15 and it was really loud

unless your amp supported it then no you were getting dts tracks and this update would only improve movies that only had dts-hd ma which has way more mbps then the standard 1.5mbps dts track

It decodes DTS-MA internally and outputs it as PCM.

The PS3 (and the evidence is mounting) most likely can't bitstream the new audio formats. This remains unconfirmed.

The update always takes a couple of days to show up on the Playstation website. Through the "System Update" option on the XMB is always the quickest way to get it. Somebody posted in a thread a list of links for the update via PC...
