Review has been posted!

The review doesn't mention whether the physical extras mentioned before are in the Blu-ray.

Yes it does. All of the extras are listed as being in HD, so they would be on the Blu-ray.

They said physical extras. They're referring to the booklet that includes a letter from Hayao Miyazaki. I don't consider it an "extra" personally so I wouldn't expect it to be advertised or mentioned in reviews.

Oops, but yeah, there's no way to know until the movie gets released or another site's review happens to mention it. The only reviewer here I know of that mentions whether a booklet is included is Svet Atanasov.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this film was. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Can't wait to see it again in HD.

I have the Taiwan blu-ray (which is a port of the Japanese blu ray) and it really does look amazing on blu-ray. I hope the US blu ray is just as good.

Hi,

That's because Cecile Corbel, was working from the Disney English Dub script, and not the original Japanese langauge/English subtitled version. Even in the original source novels (there are six, I think, if memory serves), Arrietty is only 13 years old. So the song is wrong, unless you watch/enjoy the Disney Dub.

I watched FROM UP ON POPPY HILL at my local arts cinema this weekend just gone, and it's an amazing film! A slow-burner, for sure, and the first 15-20 minutes, it's not entirely clear what kind of film it's trying to be, but if you just go with the flow, it'll get its hooks into you, and suddenly you'll click, and get it.

As always, the animation is astonishingly great. The scene featuing the two leads on a cycle ride is beautiful, as are the sections of the film featuring the Latin Quarter Clubhouse. (Definitely a sequence that you will step through, frame-by-frame on Blu-Ray, due to all the little quirks and in-jokes hidden within.)

By the end of the film, you'll leave and be eager to watch it all over again. It's an unusual Ghibli film, with more linking it to GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES than the likes of SPIRITED AWAY or KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE, but it's really, really good. And the soundtrack too, is another one, that will be a grower on you.

If you can, go see this theatrically, in Japanese with English subs, not the horrible, whiney, celeb-filled English dub - which is never the way to enjoy a Ghibli film.

Definitely not possible, as Cecile Corbel wrote the songs while the film was in production in Japan as her songs and music was included in the original version, way before Karey Kilpatrick wrote the US English dub script. The opening lyric for Arrietty's Song are the same in the English and Japanese versions, as the song starts out in English..

I dunno, since I have never picked up a Cinedigm release before. Not sure how much latitude Ghibli has given Gkids and Cinedigm in terms of Blu-ray region.

ARRIETTY was one of the best Ghibli films, and Disney made numerous Western "fixes", which include the following:

1) The film's title should be either just ARRIETTY, or the more literal translataion is THE BORROWER, ARRIETTY. Disney change it to THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY, which is not only inaccurate, but also excessively dumbed down for US Ghibli fans.

2) Character names: Arrietty, mum Homily, dad Pod, and Spiller all stay the same in the US, UK and Japanese versions, but...
Haru (the housekeeper) - becomes Hara
Aunt Sadako - becomes Aunt Jessica
Sho - becomes Shawn, and
The cat (Niya in the UK and Japanese versions) becomes Nina!

3) The Disney dub changes Arrietty's age from 13 to 14. (She's actually 13, and the Japanese dialogue actually mentions that she's nearly 14 years, quite early on in the film! )

The House Of Mouse is clearly happy to ruin other people's films, but would burst a blood vessel, if anyone from another country dared change the character's names in any of their works! A very poor show indeed, from Disney!

If you've only seen the US Disney version of ARRIETTY, then you haven't seen ARRIETTY at all!

im all for keeping a movie perserved to their original state, but seriously, because the made her 14 instead of 13, a couple names were changed, and the title is slightly different, I havent actually seen the movie? Taking it a little far.

Plus, Disney releasing these films in North America has benefited Studio Ghibli in allowing their films to reach a broader audience, whether that was necessary or not. I'd rather have Disney have the rights to a majority of the films than have them cast to the wind and either never end up over here or be handled by a ton of different, possibly lower-quality studios. Believe it or not, some genuine fans may not have discovered the studio at all if it weren't for Disney. Not everyone has the knowledge or means to research anime and go "straight to the source," although they probably end up doing just that after becoming a fan. Disney's dubbed version may have been their first taste of anime, which lead them down the path to discovering more of the studio's films and other studio's films, and even watching them in the original language.

Also, for the dub fans, I'm sure the fact that Disney was dubbing these films helped attract some of the top-notch talent that has been in some of the dubs. Christian Bale, Jean Simmons, and Lauren Bacall in Howl's Moving Castle spring to mind. However, I understand that if you hate dubs, this isn't a selling point either way.

I'm usually completely against dubs, but since these studio ghibli ones tend to be so well acted, I don't care as much. Would be nice if the translation was more accurate though, but not a deal breaker for me.

I just picked up From Up on Poppy Hill from Best Buy today. It seems there's a serious audio problem on the blu ray disc where the dialogue is barely above a whisper on both the English and Japanese tracks. Has anyone else encountered this problem with their copy?

Mine should be arriving from Amazon tomorrow, hopefully this isn't a widespread issue since it isn't mentioned in this site's review. Sorry you are having a problem.

How much was this title at Best Buy? I was wondering if any stores would carry it on release day, so I decided to keep my Amazon pre-order.

Really wish Gkids would get all the Ghibli licences. The packaging for Poppy Hill is fantastic! and it even came with a little booklet with concept art! Disney needs to hand over all the rights to them! I'm tired of them picking "the best" titles to only release on blu-ray. I want Tales From Earthsea on Blu-ray and the Yamadas! oh well...
