Effectively, if I'm right about your situation, your receiver is using the FL and FR sound streams to create a single third stream that is being played through both rear speakers... which is the complete opposite of DTS HD MA.

It definitely sounds like a playback unit issue though and not receiver... unless you are using an optical cable for audio, in which case optical cables can only handle 2 ch PCM.
I must've asked what cable (actual cable was being used) couple times at least. I dunno whether the OP actually answered me or not (telling me the HDMI version doesn't count), but two things:
a) optical only gives 2 channels like you said
b) optical is the only time I've ever heard of a PS3 setting it to 2 channel PCM when set on 'auto'...

I really would like to hear, "I am using an HDMI cable for my sound..." - it sure would help...

Then it's just a matter of checking off those boxes in the PS3 settings if they aren't already checked (for whatever reason...)

Here's what's needed:
1 - HDMI cable
2 - make sure under BDVD settings on the PS3 that HDMI is set to Linear PCM
3 - make sure under sound settings on the PS3, that HDMI is chosen, and that all the boxes are checked (2.0, 5.1 AND 7.1)

That should do it. If I've missed anything, someone let me know.
