I think when Tokyo Drift was released, that Universal didn't think there was going to be any more films, until they opted to drop Vin Diesel at the end of the film and it took off. I'm all for producing these movies in the proper time/chronological order.

When they hired writers to pen the first sequel, one was written with Vin's character in it, the other was not which became 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Tokyo Drift, Vin did the cameo as a favor to the director more so to Universal Studios. Either way it was a smart move since the next set of movies was planned.

Plus when the first one was made, no one really thought it would become the movie it had let alone spawn a franchise. Back in those days "Franchises" where not usually planned out like they most of them are today.

Yep, very excited he is back! I really enjoyed Tokyo Drift a lot, i thought 2f2f was horrible tho.

He also did it for no pay in a a deal and get the rights to the Riddick character and series from Universal, so he could go on and make the 3rd film independently (which years later got a distribution deal... with Universal)
