When I didn't know what show I'd be watching in the focus group, first saw the Karate Kid clip and heard the J.Geils Band, I thought "YES! VH-1's bringing back I Love the 80's! About danged time, too!

Umm....no. "80's" here meant that a couple of times people wear neon colors, they give the older sister Something Sorta Like Big Hair, they mention Star Wars a coupla times, and the older brother plays a Simon game. (Uh, that's 1979, you're a couple years off, guys!)

...And the crowd shouted "Fraud!"

I watched this tonight. Wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Will definitely watch next week.

Going to dvr this to see an episode when KATHRYN LEIGH SCOTT GUESTS ON NEW TV SITCOM, she one of my favs from Dark Shadows (Maggie, Josette, Kitty, Rachel).

Quote:
She’s “Miriam” in an episode of the new ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs.” She guests as the girlfriend of George Segal’s character in “Call Me When You Get There.” She says, “I had such a great time working with George! Wonderful cast and crew and great fun!”

It wasn't the greatest thing that I've ever seen, but I enjoyed it for what it is. I liked the 80s nostalgia aspect, and while it wasn't the most original thing out there, I'm kind of a sucker for more 'traditional' sitcom fodder these days. I also did like the end credits where they compared footage from the show to the creator's actual home videos from the 80s.

I'll tune in next week. For the past couple of years the only show that my wife and I watch on Tuesdays is New Girl, which we enjoy a lot. Now with Agents of Shield and the Goldbergs, we can DVR New Girl and have a full 2 hour block of shows that we enjoy... at least so far for these newer shows.

I watched the first episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine and wasn't super impressed. I have the second episode DVRed which I plan to watch this weekend, but if it doesn't hold my interest, I'll be dropping it going forward. Other new sitcoms that we've tried, but haven't been impressed with are The Crazy Ones (Robin Williams new show) and Mom.

I have the Michael J Fox show DVRed, as I am a fan of him, but I'm goig in skeptical since the premise seems very 'on the nose' with the whole Parkinsons thing.

There are other new shows that just based on the ads don't look interesting like Trophy Wife or James Kahn's new show on ABC.

So while it's not saying much, so far for me The Goldbergs is winning the new sitcom competition.

I don't see why the fact that Simon first came out in 1979 should prevent it's inclusion. `79 is only one year before the 80s began, and unless the game was relesed on January 1,1979, it would have been around for less than a year before the start of the 80s. It was popular and heavily advertised throughout the 80s. Heck, I was born in January of 1980 and remember seeing commercials for it left and right a few years later.

The same goes for Star Wars. The first film came out in '77, but the sequels came out in '80 and '83, and the frachise was very popular at the time. Plus the original movie first came out on VHS in 1982, which was kind of a big deal at the time. Things that were VERY popular in the 80s shouldn't even be mentioned if their origins happened to originate in the late 70s? That's just stupid.

If you don't like the show, that's fine, but you are really splitting hairs and are being overly anal about the references just to have an excuse to further criticize it.

I was born in 1979 and my child hood was the 80's I really liked this show just for the nostalgia part. Its mostly the same reason I liked the The Carrie Diaries.

Not that impressed with the first episode, but I love 80s nostalgia so I will watch a few episodes before I make up my mind.

Thought the second episode was even better than the first. Nothing amazing, but a fun comedy nonetheless.

The thermostat joke is something I know i saw in another show. Family Guy maybe.

It know the show is a sitcom, but it just seems too sitcomy for me from what I've seen so far.

agree, I don't get his point. So if someone got Simon as a gift for Christmas he would have to get rid of it a week later so that he would not have it in the 80's?

Really enjoying this and reminiscing of my late elementary and middle school years (late 80's/early 90's).

Man, I had completely forgot about slap bracelets and the skating rink brought back memories ours just closed down a year ago.

I'm just about to jump over the fence, but my wife is enjoying it a bit more than me. We both like the actress who plays the mom and actor who plays grandpa. Loved her out skating her son and basically ruining his getaway place. Something that surprised me was the fanny pack. I had no idea people used these until around the 90's? My wife looked it up and apparently these damn things were around.

Rewatched the first 2 episodes and laughed throughout them. My favorite quote was "A whole day? I don't even like spending a day with myself. That's why I nap."
