Cool I thought so the audio sounds good and all, but I kept thinking this is NOT a new soundtrack recording for this piece. I usually only watch that segment when I watch the original Fantasia.

Probably not. I wouldn't mind seeing it -- along with Destino, Lorenzo, and One by One as bonus features on a re-issue of Fantasia/2000, though.

I thought the Little Matchgirl was supposed to be on the just released Little Mermaid - it would have sense since both are Hans Christian Anderson stories - oh well...

When to my local closing Blockbuster tonight two minutes before closing with my friend and got the original classic for $10 (it rang up for $17 at first) - my friend also bought it since shes really into classical musical and said this was her fav disney film. I've never seen it, but for $10 for it seemed like a good deal! My Disney Collection is building. I just need to get a custom slipcover made if I enjoy it. They also had the sequel, I might go back and get it. These were the only classic Disney films they had on Blu-Ray.

You answered my original complaint. Brown should stick to the technical details and leave his irrelevant personal insights out of it. Another example would be his recent 'review' of Mary Poppins.

"Disney through and through; spectacular, colorful, gorgeous but all wrapped around mediocrity." After doggedly, endlessly fighting filmmaker Walt Disney every inch of the way for more than two decades, that was the reaction of "Mary Poppins" author P.L. Travers to a film that rightfully remains one of Disney's most beloved classics. Even so, director Robert Stevenson, screenwriters Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, and songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman's Mary Poppins stands as a rare beacon of family cinema that outshines the book series that inspired it and continues to delight children of all ages, even some fifty years after its original release.
Jealous/prejudiced much, Ken?

Going to keep saying it -- Kenneth Brown is a very good writer, and while I don't see eye to eye with him on everything (though we agree on most things), he's an asset here, doesn't deserve such caustic name-calling.

Anyhoo...back to Fantasia.

So, picked up a new receiver last night -- I had an old 6.1 THX receiver with no HDMI inputs, it received the data stream from the PS3 via optical. So last night was my first chance to finally hear the new 7.2 mix in true dts-HD master audio.

Now, this may be due to my unfamiliarity with the new receiver, but the famous opening of "Tocatta and Fugue", with Stokowski first leading the left side of the orchestra, then the right, and then both together seemed to be missing the hard left/right sound pans. The surrounds, meanwhile, seemed far more aggressive than I've ever heard. I'll keep futzing with the receiver, but if they mixed out that famous opening for something with a more traditional front sound stage, I'm going to be a bit disappointed.

EDIT

Yup, they did smooth it out. I understand why they did it, because modern sound designs eschew such gimmicks, but still -- that's film history...Stokowski leading the left side, then the right, then all together. Disappointed.

Fantasia/2000's mix sounds amazing. I guess the disc never really received its due accolades for sound because it is comprised of music, not hellzapoppin surround sound. The music has real punch and clarity...that LFE thump when the Sprite awakens the Firebird will make you jump out of your seat.

Love the movie and the sound. Fantasia2000 is one of my favorite animated films.

Speaking of the sound mixes, I finally hooked up my LaserDisc Player to my new setup I got last summer and also connected wire to my SUB for 2.0 audio so now I get some 2.1 sound on certain titles depending on their audio track output.

So I finally put in my old Fantasia LD and the stereo soundtrack seperation was quite interesting in comparison to the 7.1 as expected. Of course LD video isn't the greatest for sure.. but it is always interesting to revisit what the film used to look like to me and see how eye popping the HD is. Audio on LDs in most cases were quite good and I still believe many LD's had much better audio than DVDs.

I kind of wish we had a small little LaserDisc forum Thread like we do for DVDs.

complete? I thought the main reason why they replaced it was because they couldn't use the complete narration he did. How different is the voice? Obviously it isn't his on hte dvd/blu-ray but did they at least find a close match?

The laserdisc is based on a shorter version than the DVD/Blu-ray (where they attempted to more completely reconstruct the original version (except for the stuff they thought would make them look bad lol), for which not all of Taylor's narration was available), and is an essential piece of anyone's Disney collection for having the original narration (and I'd also argue for coming from an era where they didn't have the ability to modify these works the way Disney does now, even if Fantasia suffers less than most and at the same time looks kinda gnarly on LD).

My thoughts on LDs are that full frame/pan&scan PQ still looks watchable but letterbox looks really really bad!

Default Is this UK Blu-Ray version playable on a US player?

I just ordered the UK DVD/Blu-Ray version, used, at a great price. (zoverstocks is willing to ship to the US.) Do I have some assurance that the Blu-Ray will play on an ordinary US player?
