Folding@home Frequently Asked Questions:
What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease. What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Parkinson's disease, and cancers. ![]() I've been down sick for the last few days. Finally got around to seeing the doctor today and found that I have an ugly case of pneumonia. He has me spending a couple more days at home now until the antibiotics kick in. On the bright side, it's helping me catch up on my back-log of blu-rays. Don't have the energy to do much besides watch movies anyway. Being sick really sucks. |

![]() As far as the PSU question, I'm using one of those Antec Phantom models that is supposed to be "silent". It very well may be, but you couldn't tell anyway with this Zalman cooler installed hehe. It does work fine though. I think you can get them rated up to 800 watts or so. Mine is an older 500 watt model but it's plenty. |

Maybe i'll join too, i've done 309. I'm on a small team and they been busting out but for the past 2 weeks noone has been folding but me and i don't know why. I'm 11 units ahead of 1 person and in first out of all. Lol. If this keeps up im out. I've been on 1 other team already, i'd rather not have to start over again on a team. I'm still deciding.

![]() While another drive sounds like a great idea, what you have to remember is that if you do too many of them too close together, people have a tendancy to start tuning it out. In the meantime, do what you can to keep the competition up amongst yourselves while you wait for the right time to start another one. Another idea to kick around is a competiton with another team(s). Right now [H]ard|OCP, OCAU, overclockers.com, and MaxPC (the top 4 teams) are getting ready to kick off the 3rd annual Chimp Challenge. We all turn our boxes over to one username per team and the first one to hit 5Million is the winner. It starts in a week and a half, but the smack talk is already getting started and excitement is building. |

![]() Seriously though, I agree with you on the not having too many foldathon type events. People just stop seeing them after a while. I was talking more about doing something to get new forum members interested in F@H. Hell, if we could just get half of the PS3 owners around here to stop turning their machines off while they're at work/asleep then think of the points that would rack up. |
