Default March 2008: Cloverfield on Blu-ray speculation

So before a million of you tell me to use the search key, I'd like to both tell you that I did use the search key, and I found a thread that this would have been posted under had it not been a locked thread... For whatever reason the mods choose to lock a completely legit thread is their own...

Anyway... I'm not so much wondering a date as I am about content.

I read from MediaZEALOT
http://mediazealot.blogspot.com/2008...eculation.html

Paramount was well into the HD DVD development of their 2008 blockbuster hit Cloverfield and the studio was aiming for an April shelf-date. Over a month's work was put into HD special features including new story content and viral campaign back story. It now appears that these features may never see the light of day.

Due to the death of Toshiba's HD DVD format, and the end of their exclusivity agreement with Paramount, the movie studio is now scrambling to release Cloverfield on Blu-ray disc. However, Paramount plans to keep their original release date of April this year. Many are speculating that, due to time constraints, the disc will be a bare-bones affair with no special features to be found.

Now what i'm wondering... is that with the release of BD-Live do you all think that these features be available for download later? Isn't that one of the main selling points of BD-Live?

If not... Maybe i'm just not understainding the full implications and use of BD-Live.

Tangent- I hate buying multiple copies of films for different special features, isn't BD-Live the thing I've been dreaming of all my life?

thanks (in advance)

OP, I am really glad you added that beginning disclaimer - there's nothing worse for us jokers to see that the punchline has already been taken from us. Congratulations.

And as for on-topic: Some of us are movie buffs, some of us care more for the extras and what-not. While I like 2.0; in all honesty I just watch the movie. That's it. It's up to you to see what you want. That and if you can put up with DVDs still.

I would care more about that if I thought Cloverfield was a good movie.

Yeah, ok. It took me about 30 seconds to find this thread from 2 months ago, which contains exactly what you quoted:

Default This is a perfecdtly legit thread!

If everyone were to get past the fact that the OP is asking about Cloverfield, specifically, and focus on the meat of the matter, he has a great point.

I'm sure there are many titles that this will apply to, not only from Paramount, but Universal as well. I think it would be very short-sighted to release a bare-bones Blu-ray due to the death of HD DVD. I understand that there is an expense associated with having to, at the very least, port from HD DVD to Blu-ray, but c'mon, I think by now most studios have realized that extras are one of the many reasons that DVDs were so much more popular than VHS.

I know, I know, not everyone cares about extras, and I certainly don't watch them on all my movies, but there are those films where you just can't get enough, and want as much information and supplemental material as you can get your hands on. I think that Cloverfield will qualify as one of those movies, for fans of the film. I know there are many out there that didn't care for the "first person film shooting" style of the film, but there are many others that loved it, and there was a huge viral campaign that had fans wanting more.

All that said, if you're a film fan who just cares about PQ and SQ only, and has no love of extras, don't bother to comment. There's just no point in a thread such as this, and it will only turn into a flame thread. So move on. For others, this is a topic that was bound to come up sooner or later since the death of HD DVD and the eventual entry (and re-entry) of Universal and Paramount (even eventually Dreamworks). We want a quality, well-rounded product, not just a movie, when we're paying out top-dollar for our Blu-ray discs. There's nothing more frustrating than to have a film on DVD that has more extras on it than the Blu-ray copy. With all that storage space, why is this happening?

I'm climbing down off my soapbox now. Perhaps the OP might consider changing the title of his thread more appropriate to the discussion. Oh, and iNCREDiPiNOY, I loved your input, very funny!

Its a discussion and its open to those that don't care about extras. I could be wrong but you hear more negativity than positives and never get a clear grasp at the actual percentage of those that really care about extras.

If you aren't a fan of Chuck Norris then you have no business posting on Blu-Ray.com forum.

Blu-ray extras are worthless IMO. I just watch the movies 99% of the time. Extra shortages are NO excuse for not realeasing a Blu-ray. If they want to add them in later, simply have them downloadable to 2.0 players.

I don't think BD-live will be nearly as robust as you hope. It will probably only allow adding on of specific features programmed into the disk. If it isn't allowed by the original disk, I don't think much can be added.
