I went ahead and bought this BD for $7.99 at Best Buy because when the sale ends, I'll regret it if I don't. I don't care if the UK cut is the "preferred cut." I like the US cut better because the slower pacing works better with a movie like this. But that's just me.

Just for the record, I enthusiastically recommend the new Stephen King novel, Doctor Sleep, about the adult Danny Torrance. The story is a great continuation that comes full circle with Danny's past at the Overlook Hotel, and it spares us no details about Danny's struggles as he follows in his father's footsteps with respect to alcoholism and temper problems.

It's a great read, and one of Stephen King's better books in recent memory.

Not to derail this thread or anything, but I figure folks here might be interested in the book.

Fascinating website.

After lurking in this thread for some time now I finally ordered the US version of this film.

Looking forward to watching the "long" version.

I never watched the Shining when it first came out, since I was too young at the time. Only got around watching the "short" cut in 2012. (when I bought the Kubrick blu-ray box set)

Since I only came across the "short" cut a year ago, I guess I'll be able to give the "long" cut more than a fair chance. (The short cut is in no way "engrained" on my mind due to countless viewings over several decades.)

Someday a cut will be released with the TV scenes, hopefully.

Yeah, they don't say that at all. They just say Jack roughed the kid up a few times.

... No, it's not in Kubrick's THE SHINING. Rob Ager *thinks* it is and makes a case for it, but it is based on a lot assumptions about the production on his part.

One just have to read Leon Vitalli's comments about the production to realize how random some of the decisions made on set were, which pretty much destroys Ager's notion that everything in THE SHINING is part of some coherent argument.

The second problem with Ager is that he clearly subscribes to the psychoanalytic school of film theory - a school that really ought to have been left for dead back in the 1970s and definitely has no serious academic credibility anymore. The major issue is of course that most of the claims of psychoanalytic film theory have been debunked through the last 20 years. One famous meta-study in the mid-90s went through something like a 1000 papers and found there was almost no validity to any of the claims. But for some reason you will still find a small band of hardcore believers in film and literature theory who keep on re-iterating the same Lacanian-Freudian ideas, while most of academia has moved on and today use recent research in neurology and evolutionary psychology as basis for analysis.

In case you guys didn't already know, AMC and Cinemark will be showing it on Sunday the 27th at 2:00PM and again on Wednesday the 30th at 2:00PM and 7:00PM. It's going to be a 4K presentation of the current transfer. I'm sure it will be in 1:85:1.

I completely agree with you. I personally find some of the "connections" hilarious. Like the elevator doors symbolizing a face? The floor button plaques look nothing like eyes.

And he also alluded to the documentary shot by Vivian. As well as many behind the scenes photos. I think he was deliberately searching for things to back up his over-analyzed claims.

For one, I believe that Jack hit Danny, and it was all physical. This is backed up by Jack's previous addiction to alcohol, and to how he completely gave in during his ghostly encounters with Lloyd. And if you know about Doctor Sleep, you know that Danny seems to have carried the same alcoholic tendencies with him into adulthood.

Wasn't Jack asleep when Danny entered the room? Also, when Jack sees "the old lady" for who she really is, and we see Danny having an episode, the image of the the old lady getting out of the tub (with the camera level with little Danny's height) made it pretty clear (to me) that it was she that attacked him.

I picked up the American DVD for a couple of quid. I'll give it a proper viewing nearer Halloween, see if it changes my opinion of the US Cut.

I do like the 1.33 framing though. The added height combined with Kubrick's use of depth gives the image an almost vertiginous sense of scale, as every shot in the hallway seems to stretch backwards for miles.

Don't get me wrong, I was very happy to see it presented in something akin to the theatrical ratio on the Blu-ray (1.78 as opposed to 1.85) but the 1.33 version is also worth keeping.

For members to determine if they have a participating theater nearby. Not all theaters for these chains are participating.

What current transfer? The BD we have was released in 2007 and the master was most certainly 1080p, not 4K.
