They barley sustained the parent show for this long...This just feels like overkill. I would much rather have a show about Ted and the Mother, like 'How I Married Your Mother', or something along those lines. I think that would be a better bet. This seems like something that won't last past season one...

The problem with That 80s Show was that it had nothing in common with That 70s Show. That 70s Show used the 70s as a backdrop for a comedy about teens and their families living in Wisconsin in the 70s. That 80s Show just made jokes about the 80s rather than having it as a backdrop and was about a group of people in their 20s in San Diego. In essence fans of That 70s Show tuned in hoping to see something similar to That 70s Show and got something completely different, whereas people that didn't like That 70s Show probably didn't tune in because they thought it would be similar to That 70s Show, so the show alienated virtually everyone.

Yep, they definitely didn't stick to the winning formula from the 70s Show...
But after 9 seasons, will the HIMYM formula still work? I guess they can try to hook in a new generation that never watched it the first time around... |

Seeing as I'm only watching this season just because is the last season and not because it's great, I can see a fast cancellation for any spin off that does not include Barney. He made the show work.
I think a better spin off would be something called "Legend-ary" a show about Barney crazy/weird life before he met the gang and it would explain his need to connect to the group the way he originally did. I think it would work, not like that Joey spin off from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Last edited by Carlanga; 11-02-2013 at 05:44 PM. |

I was thinking maybe a good way to do a new show but have a connection to HIMYM would be to have it centered on the sister of one of the current characters. This way they could occasionally bring back current characters for guest spots and have a natural connection to the original. Unfortunately that could be difficult because of the three sisters from the show two are already on Pretty Little Liars, and the actress who played Ted's sister may not be well known enough to be one of the leads on the spin-off. I just would prefer if they are going to make this spin-off that it would have a real connection to the original and not just some random people they show during the series finale. |

except for the gimmick of him telling his kids the story in the future, which let's face it I don't think it influenced the writing since I can't imagine anyone has ever sat their kids down and went into that much detail about who they were with in the past, isn't the formula the same as friends or any such show? i.e. the life of a bunch of friends.

Character names/descriptions have been revealed for the show. Casting is taking place right now.
SALLY | She’s vibrant, messy and unpredictable — a “female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life.” She’s thinking of calling it quits with her husband of a year, Gavin. She’ll lean on her circle of friends for advice and support through the inevitable divorce. That circle includes… JULIET | Sally’s sexy, flamboyant, energetic, party-girl BFF. She runs a successful fashion blog. She’s delighted to learn Sally is ending things with the terminally boring Gavin. DANNY | Sally’s older gay brother, a Type A, overachieving lawyer whom she shares little in common with. They nonetheless share a tight bond, although Sally’s decision to move in with Danny after her split with Gavin promises to test that bond. TODD | Danny’s warm, outgoing husband and one of Sally’s closest friends from college. Unlike Danny, Todd welcomes Sally into their home. FRANK | The head of IT for Juliet’s fashion blog. He’s a hot nerd. He has genuine feelings for Sally, but it’s a one-sided flirtation. At least for the moment. NARRATOR | It’s Sally from the future. She’s reliving the events of her past to her kids. |
