Well there are good parts to Returns -
Spacey was actually menacing as Luthor
Bosworth was solid as Lane
Superman back on the big screen for the first time since Superman IV
Routh turned in a command performance as Superman Bizarro
All in all it's a massive mess of a film but it is a more than suitable wiped slate movie that tried to erase the horrible films III and IV.

I love Superman Returns, and I was greatly hoping for an expanded DC Cinematic Universe with the cast from Returns, it's a shame we didn't get to see a sequel to it.

Actually Superman Returns is the only Superman movie I like.
On the other hand, MOS managed to beat IM3 as the most disappointing film of 2013, it had so much potential.

I was bitter that Man of Steel was made as a reboot of sorts but I enjoyed it more than I expected to, however IM3 was a disaster to me. IM 1 and 2 are two of my absolute favorites and 3 was such a letdown.

He was never made to be a main event player, really, look at him in films after that, he barely shows and he's not good in the few minutes he have to do ! It's that kind of pretty boy who never really show acting skills. He plays what he is in real life and that's not what we want to see and the reason he don't have big roles !!

I've always loved "Superman Returns." I enjoy the story line of Superman having to cope with living in a world that has moved on without him. I much prefer "Superman Returns" to "Man Of Steel."

When I saw Superman Returns in the movie theater a few days after it opened in June of 2006 I loved it, I thought it was a great movie. I have rewatched it a few more times over the years and my opinion has slightly changed. I think that Superman Returns is pretty good but not great.

There are a few flaws, for starters I think that the movie is drawn out, some parts can be confusing, and the action sequences were very good but there wasn't enough.

I did like the storyline though, I thought the cast was great, I loved hearing the John Williams themes, and I liked the dark tone it had during the climax.

Superman Returns was a massive success making $400,000,000 and getting mostly positive reviews. But a year after it came out all this controversy regarding the movie began.

I hoped that a sequel would be made but unfortunately it didn't happen. I saw Man Of Steel in the movie theater and I found it to be very disappointing. I would have preferred a sequel to Superman Returns instead of Man Of Steel.

I honestly wish we'd get a chance to see that longer version of Superman Returns, just based on the script.

It wouldn't have added more action but things would've been even more clearly, based on the shooting script.

Even with Man of Steel supplanting the others as my favorite Superman film, I still love Superman Returns. Watched the ending of that film the other day and it still strikes a cord with me...even more so now than it did 7 years ago.

It makes for a nice capper to what Donner started in '78.

All I have to say about the quality of this film is that Superman was stabbed with a Kryptonite shiv and then lifts an island made of the stuff that kills him. I get that there's a small layer of "crust" between the actual Kryptonite and him but this was the only time I've sat in a theater and yelled out "bullshit."

Fully agree here - Rerurns IS our Superman 3 and while flawed in many areas it works just enough that Im sold.

Man of Steel? Never heard of it.....

Just ordered a UK copy of this for 6 pounds. I'd previously sold it off in a large purge of blu-rays and have since regretted that decision.

Whilst I think that it's heavily flawed and would only award a 3/5 film score, there's still a lot to like. Brandon Routh makes for a great Superman, Kevin Spacey is an enjoyable villain, the film has a dark tone, it's good that the Williams score is re-used and the film has a couple of great Superman sequences (plane rescue and bullet in eye).

On the downside, there's just not enough action, the weak script has an unnecessary and unoriginal re-cap of Luthor's Superman 1 land plan and the choice to introduce a Superman child to the mix was a really bad idea that would have been highly problematic for future potential sequels.

It's also unfortunate that the film chooses to portray Superman as a creepy stalker, spying on Lane - he left Earth for 5 years without even saying goodbye, how or why would he be surprised or put out that Lane was in a new relationship?

Superman Returns - flawed and overlong (I suspect that children would find it boring) but still fairly enjoyable. An interesting take on Superman mythos even if some of the decisions taken were bad ideas.

Was heavily disappointed at the time of release as I had expected a killer movie after Singer's stellar work on the X-Men franchise and what was delivered was merely adequate. With hindsight, the film isn't as bad as it seemed at the time but it's not surprising that the franchise was completely rebooted instead of seeing sequels.

Fully agree here. The "newest" Superman films with Cavill in them are horrible crap. The First two Reeve Superman films and Returns are my personal trilogy per se. I discard the original 3rd and 4th films - they are simply terrible.

Returns gets enough right IMO. Its too long and like you said "messy" at times. But I still like it.

Yeah that's what I've got. Haven't actually watched the Returns disc but if the info on the back is correct, it's the disc that has the lossless audio, so it's the better version anyway.

Superman Returns was the last good movie starring the character. Not a fan of reboots, but in this case I'm hoping for one.

There are things about Returns I really like, and there are things about it I can't stand, so overall it falls squarely in the middle for me. Never saw III and IV but of the ones I have seen, I think it's just below II so it falls into fourth place out of four lol
