I picked up the regular 2D extended version at Walmart for $20 tonight. I was undecided, but the price, extra bass and curiosity of the additional scenes swayed me. The extras didn't hurt either. Time to sell my theatrical digibook.

I thought that they were $29.99 at my local stores, but to be honest, I just glanced very briefly at the stand, so I might've misread the cost on that set...I know for a fact that the 2D set was $19.96...sorry for any confusion, I will correct that previous post...does Walmart not price-match Amazon?

I feel the same way... I haven't opened it yet either, and I'm debating whether or not I should keep the Steelbook or return it and get the 5-Disc 3D/2D Combo Pack instead. I prefer having a 2D Disc as well rather than just the 3D Disc. What to do?

I too liked the new scenes. the movie is already long, so what's another 13 minutes? I laughed out loud twice during the extendd cut. its weired but after the extended cut I felt the theatrical seemed rushed. anyway the ext. cut gave the film a lil more heart. I cared more.

I'm going to sell the theatrical. should I keep the special features disc?

They will if you have the printout, which I did not.

I haven't had this problem since I bought The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray the day it came out back in December of 2008.
I was able to exchange my Blu-Ray copy of The Hobbit Extended Edition that had a broken case today. The employee was really nice about it and gave me another copy in perfect condition with no problems at all.

Just finished the Extended Cut. Miles and away better than the theatrical cut imo. Loved it!

I have to be honest and say I didn't feel the extended version added that much. Except for the scene between Bilbo and Elrond, I thought that did wonders to show the connection and eventual friendship between those two. The added Goblin song really wasn't my cup of tea at all. The behind the scenes documentaries have been wonderful though! Most movies really don't make special features like this anymore! That alone has been worth the purchase for me!

Why did they made the box that big?
They could have fitted the statue easily in a DVD EE sized box.

And why there's only one small "window" on the box?
The EE DVD boxset has 2 or 3 wide opening so you can see the statue AND the dvd.

They also found a way to hide the styrifoam in the two towers EE but with this one they didn't.

I love the statue and the look of the 5 disc case but I'm not really happy with the packaging. I will display them next to my LOTR EE sets with statues and the less important triogy will have the most shelf space not to mention it's one inche too tall to fit in the same shelf as my LOTR sets.

Really let down by the packaging. Was hoping for an insert at the least with appendices content details. Oh well.

We ought to make our own insert as a forum. Shouldn't be terribly difficult to do and it's something I would like as well. Just a list of scenes and chart for each disc would be fine for me. I'll look into it tomorrow.

I bought the 2D extended from Walmart. I enjoyed the movie in the theater, but I was not impressed with the 3D. I am happy with the 2D extended. Frankly, I wish there were more additional scenes .

The video is gorgeous. Haven't watched the supplements yet.

I used a $5 Mystery Reward Zone Certificate at Best Buy towards the purchase of the 3D Steelbook. If I planned on returning the Steelbook, would I still get my certficate back?

So I guess their exclusive is just a slimmed-down, cheaper version of the DVD. It specifically mentioned it had the features "The Company of Thorin" and "Durin's Folk: Creating the Dwarves", meaning I guess those are the only special features on it, since they are both part of the regular extended edition's features.
Oh, and the BD was 19.96, and their exclusive DVD was 17.96. Sorry, I didn't notice the price of the 3D.
So, to sum up, the listing here for the Walmart exclusive 3D version is incorrect/it does not exist?

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-H...Blu-ray/88686/

Same goes for this one? (if so, these should probably be removed)

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-H...Blu-ray/88685/

The only Walmart Exclusives are the Digibook version (with no 3D option) and the DVD-only version?

Yes, I think the video quality on this is better than on the theatrical blu ray, the colors look amazing.

I am not to sure how they do it when it is one of this free RZ certs they give out. Usually, when you returned a item that had a cert applied to it, the system wouuld try to apply it to another item. If no other item is available to do this on the same transaction, you would get points put back into you account in the amount of that cert, in this case 250, that could take around 2/5 days to show up.

The local Fry's, Target & Bestbuy are not yet stocking the Extended Version in the retail store.
Anyone know why?

Damn! Really? In other words, I'm out of luck then, huh? I just rather have the 2D Disc with the 3D Disc than just the 3D disc by itself...

You could always ask CS what would happen at bestbuy what would happen to the mystery cert if you returned the movie. Or you could call CS after your return posts on your RZ page and it didn't credit it you the points, and ask why you weren't credit back 250 pts for the cert that you used, but then had returned the item.
