Tron: Legacy completely robbed, easily the best score of 2010. I'm a big Trent fan as well as love Hans Zimmer but Daft Punk out did them by far this time

Was thinking the same thing, but the score in TSN was also very good, although I'm not sure about that version of Grieg's 'In the Hall of the Mountain King'.Not sure if a classical version would have been better...

Disney Moving Forward with TRON 3 With Director Joseph Kosinski and Writers Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz!

Before it got released on DVD today, Tron: Legacy managed to play in theaters long enough to establish Joseph Kosinski as the highest-grossing first-time director of a live-action film in Hollywood history. The film's $399 million global gross recently eclipsed the $397.5 million gross that JJ Abrams turned in on 2006's Mission: Impossible 3.

Now, such a distinction is relative. Tron: Legacy cost between $165 million and $170 million to make and a comparable amount to market. Sam Mendes made his debut on the $15 million American Beauty, which grossed $356 million worldwide in 1999. Jan De Bont's debut on the $30 million Speed turned in a $350 million worldwide gross in 1994. Ticket prices were lower when American Beauty and Speed were released, and Tron: Legacy had the extra benefit of higher 3D pricing. American Beauty and Speed were extravagantly profitable. Disney will make some money on Tron: Legacy, but they won't need to back up the Brink's truck.

But Tron: Legacy's performance certainly gives the studio reason to think it has poured the foundation for a franchise. Disney has begun work on a sequel, which Kosinski is constructing with original writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Maybe because of Tron: Legacy's pricey launch and heightened expectations, I had the impression that the film had been a bit underwhelming, despite a $44 million opening weekend. But looks are deceiving. For one thing, despite the film's big budget, Tron: Legacy had the benefit of zero first-dollar box office gross participants. Another pic that opened around the same time, Little Fockers, was teeming with them.

Should Kosinski's crown buy a Tron: Legacy encore? Its performance certainly compares well to other 2D films that launched franchises. Tron: Legacy out-grossed the Chris Nolan-directed Batman Begins ($373 million) and the Abrams-directed Star Trek ($386 million), both of which were based on brands far more famous than the long-forgotten 1982 original Tron. For that matter, Tron: Legacy out-grossed The Bourne Identity ($214 million) and its sequel The Bourne Supremacy ($288 million). It also bested X-Men Origins: Wolverine ($373 million), National Treasure ($347 million) and The Fast and the Furious ($207 million). It out-grossed all the films in that franchise. Beyond that, the film fed other Disney divisions. The Tron: Legacy soundtrack sold 615,000 copies worldwide, and the movie spawned ElecTRONica, a featured attraction at Disney’s California Adventure theme park. A Tron: Legacy rollercoaster for the new Shanghai theme park is under discussion.

Now, just because a studio makes it out alive after a big bet on a film doesn't mean it's franchise city. Said one vet: "Sometimes, you say, 'We got away with one,' and move on. From Terminator to Bourne, you can usually tell if the audience wants more." Based on the Tron: Legacy gross and high DVD pre-sales, Disney will go for two. And Kosinski seeded the original with plot points that lend to a sequel.

When Kosinski gets to Tron: Legacy 2 is another matter. He has other projects that include a remake of Black Hole at Disney, with a script being written by Travis Beacham, writer of Guillermo del Toro’s next film, Pacific Rim. Kosinski is most likely to next direct Oblivion, a film that has Tom Cruise interested. Disney gave that picture back to Kosinski recently, because its post-apocalyptic vision didn't fit the Disney family film mold, and attempts to make it PG was strangling Kosinski's vision. Kosinski's reps at Verve and Anonymous Content are shopping it, and I've heard Universal is among three suitors giving it serious consideration.

I am not sure how long Kosinski’s first-time director milestone will last. Hollywood has become bolder about giving mega-budget features to first-timers. Carl Rinsch is directing Keanu Reeves in 47 Ronin at a reported $175 million budget, and Rupert Sanders is directing Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and a Huntsman to be named later after Viggo Mortensen withdrew. Either could topple Kosinski from his perch.

Nice. I haven't seen either Tron movie yet, but after I watch my copies of both it'll be nice knowing there will be another one coming.

killowertz, good that you'll be viewing Tron 1 before Legacy. Just remember that the effects are out-dated but for how they did them at the time makes you appreciate it even more afterwards.

Jeff Bridges was great in the original, but you'll see more of "The Dude" in the sequel, rather than his Flynn character which I didn't really care for. That small thing has just bothered me on repeat viewings of Legacy.

I saw this film 3 times at the movies on IMAX and 3D. it has to be the best film I've seen since ROTS..it sure beats all the marvel movies. It's a complicated film...

I wrote this on another site..

You have to watch the first one to get the second one, if someone tells you that you don't they are wrong..

...SPOILERS! (continue?)

At the end, Kevin Flynn Implodes the grid (the universe). After defeating CLU...the program he created in the first movie..this is clu 2.0.

In the first movie, at the end Kevin jumps into the MCP and destroys it...we then see the Grid expanding and becoming free as tron was a security program...exploding the bits of information all around the grid 360 degrees...turning the grid blue and defeating the contamination.

Tron LEgacy is a religious film. it has christian themes and stories...Sam Flynn is the God of the universe..he controls everything...but he gave free will to the programs in order to execute his expansion and to have more freedom in the grid; so others could help him with the task of creation.

But CLU becomes selfish and insane thinking he can control everything and everyone and turning every program from light to dark. He becomes obsessed with perfeting the system.

Clu, his other self, signifies his inner dark self...Satan sent to hell and refusing his creator...he becomes pure evil and takes over the grid...Kevin is imprisioned by his own creation...

Sam is much like Jesus the savior sent to change the outcome...Castor calls him out on this as he calls him the "Son of the savior" something in that manner.

Tron Legacy parallels the first tron..it is the opposite of the first one..Tron here is RED, in the first he was BLUE. He is now pure evil and destruction...

in the end, Kevin Flynn implodes his creation into a BIT...a bit of information as seen in the first movie with the funny talking BIT that followed him around in the recognizer vehicle...we also know that Tron doesn't die and becomes blue (A christian) again as he falls into the water..he is reborn as christians are in water.

Flynn doesnt destroy Clu, he takes him back in billions and billions of pieces of information that later Sam downloads into his dogtag and most likely could just re-organiZe and resolute again. Basically, flynn derezzed himself taking with him everything he created..much like god, Kevin was questioned by everyone in the grid...Clu, seemed confused to this and never understood why flynn would give him a task to perfect the grid and then abandon the idea. Flynn explains that since Clu was limited to understanding creation, he could not do more than he could, therefore he was flawed, much like humans are compared to god.

TRON speaks in many levels..it's a truly subliminal film...a terror hidden in graphics..an idea about myths and religion..

Sam was in the dark, in denial and had not seen the light..he was blinded by greed and corporate heads..but once he enters the grid he literally see's the light and is awakened..he meets quorra an angel archtype...she is his guide into the light...

The discs they all have in the back are like halos and their vehicles and weapons are designed with religious intents...it is a dark movie.

Tron Legacy is basically a parallel to the first tron..scene by scene..mostly opposite to the first one at times, but others just similar in storyline..but in the end, the same things happens implosion/explosion..

Well, Hope this explains why TRON legacy is just NOT about the effects and why it's such a great film. If you have any Questions let me know. thanks.

Let's not say the effects are out-dated, let's call them "period". The original grid is based off the games that Kevin Flynn created using the graphic capabilities of the time. It was the design of the time, like Alan's large glasses, and large lapels.

If we sent people into the first movie with the mentality "the graphics suck" we take away from the nostalgic beauty they hold. It's a hyper 1980's arcade feel. That stuff was cutting edge because well into the 1990's it was still difficult to replicate "those simple graphics" on 486 computers. Today it's nostagic geekdom.

80s games today are outdated...that's what makes them cool. So the movie is outdated too because it's based on those old arcade games..makes sense to me.

I never saw Tron: Legacy in the theater because I wanted to watch Tron first. I was waiting on Tron to come out on Blu-ray and it obviously never did until now. I realize that one probably doesn't have to see the original first to enjoy Legacy, but I've been wanting to see Tron for a while now and I figured it was best to wait until the Blu-ray finally came out. I doubt the effects will bother me really.

No doubt about it since that doesn't sound like anything the people who made Tron: Legacy would even remotely think about putting in.

Exactly!

Also, there is no way the *Studio* would even entertain any of those ideas coming near this expensive film.

Yea, there has to be a mix up. While it does sound intriguing there is no way it would be in a Tron film. Now, I think it could be for The Hangover 2. That would make more sense.

Uh-oh...I made a boo-boo...

Although, admittedly, the Tron world would have gotten a hell of lot crazier...

I'm sure there will be a XXX spin off of Tron. Hell, I have already seen some adult oriented Tron Legacy cosplay pictures.

Well, Blockbuster bankruptcy meant I got Tron Legacy now.
Saw this on HDTV a few times, just watched it last night, so much better on Blu-ray.

The LFE was incredible, a few reference scenes.

Just one thing, the actor who played "Quorra", Olivia Wilde.
I noticed after a few scenes seemed like she had lazy eye, really, her left eye seemed to track a tad slower than the right eye.....
Has anybody noticed this before? Once I picked up on that, it kinda drove me a little crazy.....
