I think a multinational, multibillion dollar corporation has a marketing department that conducts polls and other types of research. Or they contract with a multinational, multibillion dollar market research corporation to do that work for them. And they know exactly which PS3 owners played Rage, RE, Borderlands, Beyond: Two Souls, etc. in local coop, because most play while connected and have agreed to share such data with Sony and its partners.
