and since you dont even have to pay VAT if you are in the U.S you can probably get the movies and player even cheaper.

Hidden Fortress 27.97$

Throne of Blood ~25$

Thinking big picture: a region free player is a bad idea for me. The big problem it creates is more movies are available to purchase. At this time I prefer to wait for US releases and save my dough.

I hope this year is the year of McCabe & Mrs. Miller. Maybe it was a sign when B&N screwed up my DVD order from the marketplace and had to cancel it?

Here is my running list that I have mentioned a few times on this thread. The list is a ranking of the Criterion titles that I have seen since being a member of the bluray.com community, or as I refer to it to my wife - "the nerd board." Thanks, everyone for the great recommendations. I'm sure I'll feel inclined to post something else today, but let me get this out of the way - Happy New Year, everyone! Whatever you do, be safe. Here's to many great films in 2014! Cheers.

[Show spoiler]1 Ikiru (Kurosawa)
2 Rosemary's Baby (Polanski)
3 Au Revoir, Les Enfants (Malle)
4 A Man Escaped (Bresson)
5 Last Year at Marienbad (Resnais)
6 Revanche (Speilmann)
7 The Lady Vanishes (Hitchcock)
8 Le Deuxieme Souffle (Melville)
9 12 Angry Men (Lumet)
10 The Double Life of Veronique (Kieslowski)
11 City Lights (Chaplin)
12 The Vanishing (Sluizer)
13 Elevator To The Gallows (Malle)
14 Sweet Smell of Success (Mackendrick)
15 Heaven's Gate (Cimino)
16 Summer With Monika (Bergman)
17 Tokyo Drifter (Suzuki)
18 Jules and Jim (Truffaut)
19 M (Lang)
20 My Life As A Dog (Hallstrom)
21 Blow Out (DePalma)
22 Yojimbo (Kurosawa)
23 La Jetee (Marker)
24 High and Low (Kurosawa)
25 Le Samourai (Melville)
26 Seconds (Frankenheimer)
27 Le Havre (Kaurismaki)

I'd say it'd not be out of question for a Chaplin film to be unveiled in the hints tomorrow - so what do we reckon will be next? The Kid, The Circus, Limelight?

Oh, I believe you'd really enjoy After Hours like I did! I really hope you get a chance to watch this film soon! I'd look forward to your thoughts on that for sure.
After Hours is a great movie, it's a very dark comedy. One of those things where everything that can go wrong, does go wrong. Full of quirky characters and bizarre situations. A wonderful change of pace for Scorsese.

My guess is the setting of the card will be a desert.

Yeah I have a hunch it won't be released by Criterion. No basis for this hunch, just a feeling.

Even if it's not released on Criterion, I'd still probably get it. It looks pretty good.

+ 1. Also, next year is the films 75th anniversary, so that release would be a good way to commemorate.

The New Year's cartoon will be posted, dissected, blowup, enhanced and otherwise folded, spindled and mutilated to within an inch of its life.

It's a lotta fun
I might get it in a little.

Don't think 'really awesome' applies to the Arrow release. At least I'm expecting better from Crtiterion. Same goes for Red River to a lesser extent.

Along the same lines, I'm hoping that CC starts releasing some of the Polish transfers (Polish releases) of the films of Wajda and Kawalerowicz, etc.

quick off-topic post, does anyone know if the Samsung BD-E5400C can be made region free? It is on sale at Woot today and it's in my budget (still looking for something for those non-US release BDs). Thanks all!!

why dont you just get a cheap region B bluray player fot those non us releases ?

most software region free firmwares are not failsafe..and hardware mods are expensive and you have to reboot the player everytime to change the region , so they are not really "region Free".

panasonic has a region free firmware but that one is expensive (its not avaible for free)

toshiba players are the ones you want to get. there are some free firmwares avaible to make some of them region free. (Toshiba BDX 1200 for example)

It's my third year nerding out on these, and I'm starting to look forward to it MORE than New Year's Eve.
Not to mention, sign up for the newsletters, and get one free cartoon clue every month.

(Hey, what can I say, I LIKED the Riddler on the old Batman series.)

Chaplin as an angel, or a torn piece of paper with a star on it.
I'm hoping for the star.

Of course, The Kid is too short for a solo feature, so most of the Chaplin Fox and M2K editions never release it by itself.
(Riddle me this, caped crusader: "Why was the Buddha lazy?" "Why are teachers obnoxious in the summer?" )

After Hours is literally a "nightmare comedy", if you ever hear the term used elsewhere--And if you do, you'll measure its definition by this movie.
Even after King of Comedy, I wasn't aware Scorsese had that sense of comic timing and outrageousness, let alone a sense of humor at all. (Thus I wasn't one of the mainstream dopes saying "Hey, where's the gangsters in Hugo?")

As for Shutter Island...he couldn't resist showing off and had one of his characters say "That's the Kafka-esque genius of it" in one scene.
A-haaaa, o-kay, Marty, NOW we see whatcha did there--Go rent Tony Perkins doing real Kafka in Orson Welles' "The Trial", and all of a sudden, the "Leo DiCaprio runs around and around on a snipe hunt while weird sinister bureaucrats give him clues to some phony 'conspiracy', until he's ultimately swallowed by the system itself" plot will look awfully familiar...

Thank You in advance!
I mentioned George Washington a few pages back, hoping to get somebody else's pov, but nobody seemed interested.

Placed my order and used up the gift cards I had with Amazon. Decided to mix up my order so that it wasn't 100% Criterion.

Yojimbo/Sanjuro Set
Seven Samurai
Sleeper
Annie Hall
Stalag 17
Greed in the Sun
Innocent Bystanders
Chaplin
Seems Like Old Times (DVD, the old Chevy Chase movie)
