The one that really jumps out, if you have not already seen it, is Jules Dassin's Brute Force, which stars Burt Lancaster. It's a firecracker of a prison movie, and it was quite violent for its day.

You're correct. It's Sony that owns the film, and doing the restoration. But since Criterion signed a deal outsourcing their accounting and distribution to Sony, there's been rampant speculation/hope that Sony (which has been licensing some of their back catalog to both Criterion and Twilight Time) might hand Lady from Shanghai off to Criterion instead of doing it themselves.

The UK version of Like Someone in Love is on route to me and should show up around 1/10.

I'm assuming that will make it a lock for the Jan 15 announcement.

The Arrow release can certainly be improved upon, which is why I'm waiting for the Criterion blu. At the last Wexner(?) talk they did they said they had a 4K scan waiting for them in New York. So hopefully they'll release it late next year.

I'm hoping Criterion release Wadja's three war films boxset on blu aswell.

One of the films we saw during that class was Pulp Fiction, and both of those women gave it very high marks.
Well, it could pertain to the region of the world you live in. Aren't you in the UK, jayembee? I think the elderly women over there can handle just about anything!

YES! And The Last Temptation of Christ is still my personal favorite Scorcese film and its not even about gangsters or crime! The first time I saw this film was only a few years ago and I immediately was captivated by it. After Hours ranks in my top 5 favorite Scorcese films too. For some reason I really enjoy his earlier to mid-period films still more than any other time of his career.

It was also Cheech and Chong's best movie (well at least the best movie they ever were in).

panasonic has a region free firmware but that one is expensive (its not avaible for free)

toshiba players are the ones you want to get. there are some free firmwares avaible to make some of them region free. (Toshiba BDX 1200 for example)
mainly because i'm running out of room in my entertainment center, and I'd rather have just one player if possible. so was just curious if anyone knew about that model..

Random question: Did Slacker or Night of the Hunter or Nashville ever get made in a regular clear case? I know both The Third Man and Bottle Rocket got made in both. I just don't care for the digi versions so I'm looking for the regular case. Thanks,

No. You're out of luck with those three titles.

I am not a fan of the digibook packages either, but I do think that The Night of the Hunter is presented beautifully. It's one of the best Criterion titles, and well worth owning. If you can find a perfect-condition digibook in a store, then that would be the preferable way to buy it.

Thanks. I believe this movie was mentioned in Almodovar's Broken Embraces. I've gotta see it!

Hey, so is anyone watching Phantom Carriage tonight?

I'm about to put Shack Out on 101 into rotation. Old school Lee Marvin for the win.

The Phantom Carriage is an excellent film, though. I can't believe that I have not got around to upgrading my DVD yet.

gosh, I love Almodovar! I always find it difficult, however, to remember the plots or premises of the movies I've seen that were made by him. Talk to Her, IMO, has such a GREAT screenplay. I'd love to see that as a Criterion release being that there is no U.S. release yet.

D'oh. Could've done that too.
Was so set on the idea of the George Pal "Time Machine" as a New Year's Eve movie, completely forgot about that one.
(And failing that, had the 3D "House of Wax" as a rental. )

Shack Out On 101
is another great "minimalist" setting movie. Old school dirt bag Lee Marvin at his finest! Not as detestable as he was in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance but he's still pretty bad!

I just posted my year-end favorites in another forum, but figured I'll share them here. After all, one of my Top 10 Movies is a Criterion title.

My Top 10 Movies of 2013:

1. All Is Lost
2. To the Wonder
3. 12 Years a Slave
4. Gravity
5. The Counselor
6. The Wolf of Wall Street
7. Blue is the Warmest Color
8. Oblivion
9. Mud
10. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

My Top 10 Albums of 2013 (Actually, the only albums I bought in 2013, as I had other entertainment priorities.):

1. Cut Copy - Free Your Mind
2. The Ocean Blue - Ultramarine
3. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) - English Electric
4. Marnie - Crystal World
5. Visage - Hearts and Knives
6. My Bloody Valentine - m b v
7. Depeche Mode - Delta Machine
8. The National - Trouble Will Find Me
9. David Bowie - The Next Day
10. Johnny Marr - The Messenger

I did not read many 2013-publication books this year, but four notables are...

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
The Tilted World by Tom Franklin and Beth Ann Fennelly
Joyland by Stephen King
The Thicket by Joe R. Lansdale

I started it a little too late last NYE and wasn't in the mood to try to follow it (not that it's hard to follow but it was...late. on nye) but now having watched it I don't see it as a NYE movie.

I don't look for fluff, exactly, but it is a party night.

(of course, I'm saying all this with half a mind to work The Ice Storm in at some point tonight)
