Me either.

Neither do I see how they can still have this popularity...

The DVD Forum still does not accept dvd+r/w as a valid format, so who cares what they chose for hi-def? I'm glad Sony went with blu-ray, and that it's succeeding. It's simple numbers. 1080p is 12x as big as 480i, so why settle for discs that are only 3.5x as big?

I can understand a reason to compete with blu-ray, but it doesn't make sense to make another format of high defination and then see that format just die out. HD DVD can't and doesn't top blu-ray at all. You can't make another disc format and have it better then blu-ray. Is there anyone that wants HD DVD to beat blu-ray and win the war? I would prefer that HD DVD flop and blu-ray win the next gen high defination war. As long as two different formats exist, manufactors have to make two different disc players and even if we had a disc player play both HD DVD and blu-ray DVD, what could would that do us if HD DVD flops?

Just to make sure we're clear, I'm not trying to excuse it, just explain it. I'm on the same level as you. At first I just wanted one format to win just so we'd have the HD movies, but now I think that HD-DVD winning would actually be detrimental, especially when higher resolutions come into play.

It does 1080p. The only thing is that the video must be compressed more than for a BD. So, say Warners were to put the same movie on both formats and encode them to the fullest of each format's capabilities, BD could handle things such as fast action shots better, like the monstrous flocks of birds on Planet Earth.

I think the only thing seperating the two formats is the amount of support that both have. Blu-ray support is way more then HD support since HD support is only one company.

I would agree with that, Microsoft and Toshiba are compeditors with their technology with players and game consoles. Everything thing i have is sony except my speakers (Bose). they make really good products and Sony has good Tech suport. Yes the Blu-ray may cost more but it is better quality.

The reason HD-DVD has the popularity now is because everyone that owns an Xbox 360 basically has to get the HD add on, and since it's only 200 to add on, they would rather buy the 200 add-on and not pay 500 or 600+ to get the blu-ray player (PS3).

That is true. However I think that everyone knows that the ps3 beats out the xbox 360 is almost every way even though microsoft doesn't want to admit it and every time that microsoft introduces someting new, sony has to combat it.

The Zune is manufactured by toshiba. Toshiba and MS are pretty tight right now. MS being on the side of HDDVD help strenghten those ties....

lol....wow......
no offence buddy...but you couldnt be more wrong.

If all 360 users had the addon, hddvd would be doing a lot better right now than it is. There are currently 10million 360's sold. MS might have sold 100,000 of thses units, and thats a far stretch to what I really believe it is.

Sony on the other hand is making blu ray far more popular by including the player in EVERY ps3 sold. Soooo you have a ps3, you have a blu ray player. For this reason blu ray is kicking hddvd's ass in all respects as far as sales are concerned.

The onlt thing hddvd has going for it is price. Its significantly cheaper then any blu ray player, and cheaper stuff sells. It still isnt enough to make the blu ray studios change sides. Even studios that were pro hddvd (warner, paramount) went format neutral with the knowledge of the ps3 having a blu ray player already built in.

Let me say that I love the blu-ray format first. But I was just wondering why can't they(the two High def disc formats) live together in Harmony.....realy. I mean, there's not just one major game console on the market. There's not just one brand named didgital camera , cell phone , HD tv, motorcycle ,watch,or soft drink for that matter. This is in no way a knock against any and all things blu-ray, I just don't see why consumers should'nt have a choice . Comments please.

You can't have two formats ranked at #1. We didn't have VS and beta for years and years. It's just that HD has so little support. I mean blu-ray wipes out HD support by ten times as much. Having two different formats might confuse some customers. I don't own either blu-ray or HD so I shoud ask this question, If you have to choose between blu-ray and HD, then would format should you go with? Is HD better then blu-ray or is it vice versa?

This is not to say that one is necceserily better that the other,it's just that being able to make a choice is important. Come'on think back to when EA bought the all of rights to the NFL that year(we all remember shitty that was). Now, granted , madden probably still would've been the number one foot ball game regardless but there's just something wrong about not having a choice. Lets get real, most of us (Including my self) have more than one dvd player in the house right? and I'm willing to bet that none of them are of the same name brand.Think about it . Every year The CES takes place , just imagine if there were only one product per consumer electronics company, the display would be mighty weak and no one would even bother.I think having a rival company is a good thing. One 'll be #1 and the other #2 that's all. Mcdonalds vs burger king. Coke vs Pepsi and so on and so on.

having a choice in this matter is good and bad.

On one hand it forces the companies exclusive to blu ray and vice versa to produce awesome transfers of their work to sell the product and make it look better then their competitors.

On the other hand,

its confusing to the majority of people that would have supported the format if there wasnt two out there. Most people wont go with a format that could be obsolete in a couple of years, and are going to wait until theres a clear cut winner before jumping in.

and gamekid.

bluray is better since its storage size is 30 gig higher for a dual layers disc. I leave studio support out of this convo since that technically isnt a hardware difference.

I think the way that it'll work is that blu-ray will be number one since it is doing so well and HD will be second. We could have both formats stay around for several years before one dies out completely.
