You called it a movie earlier in the thread. I believe movie means moving-image so I think The Act of Killing is a movie.

I disagree that the film makers' intention is the only interpretation of a film. If that is your opinion then maybe you could get a quote by Joshua Oppenheimer saying his film wasn't intended to scare the audience.

I've already agreed that genres have definitions, whether I think a film fits those definitions is up to me.

Neither of us are incorrect, it's all opinion right now and we just have to respectfully disagree with each other. I'm not as strict with film categories as you are, personally I don't see the point in getting tangled up in them.

The conjuring easily.. I wanted insidious 2 to be as good or better than first but it wasn't really the same premise as its predecessor. The conjuring was just too good, best horror for me in a few years

I found nothing about The Act of Killing surprising, nor horrifying. Certainly sad, and especially for the old guy it mainly follows around at the end, but that's about it. I'm no documentary enthusiast, but certainly not amongst the best I've seen.
what are you referring to??

P.S. It's an embarrassment to the horror genre to place the Carrie remake in it! That movie was a joke.
yea, you can...whether it is scary or not, the entertainment value is definitely there...cant remember the last movie that actually scared me... what are you 7 ... for what its worth, Conjuring was a close 2nd and i also havent seen youre next...havent seen Carrie yet either but see a few things wrong and right from the previews....

wrong - chloe is was too good looking to play Carrie...

Right - i noticed they added a few scenes from the book that were left out of the original..

Well I never said any of these films actually scared me, I just meant The Conjuring was much more suspenseful/creepy than Evil Dead, which felt more like a silly/mindless gorefest (although I still enjoyed it, so don't jump all over me).

The Conjuring > Evil Dead

Although Conjuring is extremely extremely derivative of spook house ghost films, it was still a blast to watch. One of the funnest experiences I've ever had watching a horror movie in a theater. Evil Dead, which I was expecting to love, got the violence down perfectly, but was lacking in every other aspect. I was very let down. The characters sucked and the movie was just plain boring. I honestly have no desire to ever watch it again.

A horror film is a horror film if it fits into the genre. Not all horror films are scary. As long as its well executed and enjoyable to watch than its a good film and Evil Dead was a great horror film period. Got Em!!

Personally I thought The Conjuring was tons of fun. It probably beats out Lords or is on par with it for me.

Evil Dead was an absolute letdown. I hated it.
All of Zombie's films are forgettable. Since u seem to be a fan of his I can see why u didnt like Evil Dead. Got Em!!

Evil dead was just really gross, gory and mean spirited I thought.
I found it similar to Human Centipede 2 where I was just watching the most unpleasant torture filled scenes with nothing else of value.

I hated Zombie's Halloween(2007) but I like everything else he's done. What does liking Zombie have to do with me ending up walking out of Evil Dead disappointed? I've enjoyed the entire Evil Dead Franchise until Evil Dead (2013). The gore was phenomenal, but the rest of the movie blew chunks in every other aspect. This is coming from someone who thought it was going to be awesome too!

Evil Dead, followed by Insidious 2. Wasn't really a fan of The Conjuring.

You're Next for me.

I thought the Evil Dead remake was forgettable, hated Lords of Salem, stayed far away from the Carrie remake, and have yet to watch The Conjuring.

I was trying to, thanks.

My favorites of the year were Stoker, We Are What We Are, You're Next (the humor was wicked), and Dark Touch.

The Conjuring was woeful. The dullest, most uninvolving film I saw all year until I suffered through Insidious Chapter 2. What a shock that they both sprung forth from the same personnel.

Carrie is a non-entity. It's not a movie, it's a Xerox copy of a movie that once had style and personality.
