Am I crazy for building up a blu-ray collection?

About 1 month ago I started collecting blu-rays again. Before then I sold all my blu-rays to a 2nd hand movie store, most of the ones I sold in my opinion were not worth keeping but a few of them I regret selling, especially when I didn't get much for them. I rebought a few blu-rays that I once had that I regretted selling last year because I found good deals on them. Now I have 50 blu-rays in my collection. I probably spent about $8 on average for each movie plus Best Buy rewards certificates helped lower the price even more on some of the ones I purchased from Best Buy. A family member was advising me not to buy movies anymore and just rent them or Netflix stream them. I still use Netflix and Amazon Prime subscription services for streaming some movies, especially ones I'm not sure I would want to buy.

There is one problem with that line of thinking. Not every movie is avaliable for streaming. And even when they are, there's no guarantee they'll stay on there forever.

Actually I thought of that before, but what I'm trying to say that if the movie is available on one of those services and I'm not sure if I would like the movie but want to see it then I would stream it through one of those services.

While Netflix and other online services are great low cost options I view them more as supplementary alternatives to a physical purchase. The licensing agreements put the ability to view at your discretion at risk, noting that not only are many great movies not available on Netflix but one never knows when they may pop up or disappear without warning.

Despite what Netflix or other services may provide in the future, whether it be more catalog/new release titles or 4k streaming, uncompressed audio or otherwise, I will continue to purchase physical media so long as it is available. The simple reason for this is the plethora of bonus features available on physical media that do not seem accessible at this time, or desired from the masses on the streaming format; seeing as how it is a convenience over content medium.

I have definitely slowed my pace on Blu-Ray purchased so far in 2014. As of January 28 I have only purchased 6 movies (4 of which are the Indy movies) vs. an average of 12-16 per month the first several months of 2013. I liken this to being more regimented on purchases that I view as having re-watchability or interesting bonus content/features.

People still collect records even though cassettes, CD's and MP3 provided a more convenient option. Regardless of what others view as the best option for viewing movies, you should purchase the physical media if you want it and not worry about what others say.

I recommend buying movies that you know you'll watch more than once. That's what I try to do with my blu-ray collection. I don't blind buy blu-ray's the way I did with DVD's.

While I personally prefer blu rays over streaming, I can easily make sound arguments for both sides of this argument and there really is no correct answer. That being said, one thing is certain.

Stream movies you're more casually interested in and purchase your favorites on disc so you truly own them and have the best picture and audio quality possible. Pretty sure that's the common sense approach.

I mostly buy science-fiction and 80's classics from my youth. I mostly rent the rest.

I'll be with it to the bitter end. We're not crazy. The crazy ones are the netflix subscribers and illegal downloaders. And the ones that whine when netflix removes certain titles as if they are supposed to be on there forever.

I use both quite often and have many times purchased blurays after streaming or in some cases stopped watching halfway and bought it the next day. Bluray looks way better and most of the time has special features or unrated/ alternate versions.

Collect the movies you like and want to own. Netflix is a good supplementary source, but Movies are there one day and gone the next...I have had this happen to dozens if not hundreds of them.

Depends on what movies you are buying. You can bet that the big Summer blockbusters will always be available on streaming. If your interest extends to film noir, musicals or silent film, you might not get another chance.

Some films simply must be owned in the best quality possible. Blu-ray provides that. Netflix, Hulu, and compressed .avi files aren't nearly as definitive. It is also extremely important to support smaller companies who do HD releases of lesser-known classics. They do a great service by helping preserve the history of the artform.

Like others have said, a healthy mix of digital and physical media is best.
