Signing a formal LOI is dumb if you are a top recruit. It's a binding contract on the student's part, but there are several outs for a school.

Signing it on any date is dumb. It's a 100% optional item in recruitment that 100% binds you to a school up until they decide they don't want you. If you sign the LOI and then the coach gets fired for some scandal and gets replaced by someone you hate, you lose a year of eligibility if you want to transfer. If you don't sign the LOI, you'll still be recruited and accepted into whatever school you want.

I'm clearly not a star athlete and 18 year olds aren't known for their rational thinking but my thoughts are closer to yours than not. If there are truly 3 schools that i'm down to (not for some stupid hat drama), i wait until after today and see how things shake out. Then use that as info to make the best decision for me. ex. OH wow, Alabama got 2 5-star OLB's, and have 2 returning starters. I'm an OLB too, so maybe I'll see what shape my other 2 choices are at my position and reassess everything. signing a couple days later might allow for a better decision. there's always the chance others will make the decision just as you did but still |

But wow, GT got a commitment today from a ESPN 300 guy (#249, Myles Autrey). He's done RB, slot WR and wildcat QB.... so, he's perfect for an A-back or possibly QB. |

32 to be exact. 5 will be back counted from last year because we only signed 20 last season. I believe 2 are going to grey shirt and will be a part of the 2015 class. That's how UT was able to sign so many.
The things I'm most proud of with this class are 1.) Coach Jones completely built a fence around the state of Tennessee. Of the top 10 ranked players in the state, Coach Jones got 9 of them! 2.) 14 of the players in the class are early enrollees and are already on campus! The most of any program in the country! That is HUGE in terms of getting them into the strength and conditioning program to get them physically ready to play in the SEC. Plus it gets them more quickly acclimated to college life, the expectations from the coaching staff, etc. 3.) We were the only program with a losing season last year that finished in the top 10, and we finished at #5! Jones and his staff did a phenomenal job of selling the program and the advantages of playing at Tennessee! Last edited by Steelmaker; 02-06-2014 at 02:13 AM. |

I do agree on class rankings being biased towards schools that sign a ton of players. A better measurement is avg star rating per recruit, in which case the rankings are as such:
1. Alabama 2. LSU 3. Ohio St. 4. Texas A&M 5. USC 6. Tennessee 7. Auburn 8. UCLA 9. Georgia 10. FSU Either was Tennessee did rake in an outstanding class with 2 five-star recruits and 16 four-star recruits. |

Prior to 2009, the SEC frequently signed well above the 25 scholarships allowed. The conference passed the "Houston Nutt Rule" limiting it to 28 LOIs after Houston Nutt signed 37 players in 2009. The NCAA accepted the rule the following year. In 2011, the SEC created a new rule limiting each school to 25 LOIs, though the coaches wanted it to remain 28. |

Decided to go back and look at the Rivals.com top recruiting classes of years past. Here are the number 1 ranked classes by year with points and key players signed. It's more or less been the Nick Saban show since 2008 and the Pete Carroll show prior to that.
Absent from the list is probably the best class during this span, the 2006 Florida class. They were ranked the 3 class that year but ended up with Tim Tebow, Riley Cooper, Percy Harvin, Brandon Spikes, Brandon James, among other future star players that contributed to two national championship teams. 2014 - Alabama - 3263 2013 - Alabama - 3166 2012 - Alabama - 2621 2011 - Alabama - 2632 2010 - USC - 3003 2009 - Alabama - 2786 2008 - Alabama - 2836 2007 - Florida - 2959 2006 - USC - 3010 2005 - USC - 2631 2004 - USC - 2908 2003 - LSU - 2626 2002 - Texas - 2792 |

A three-star recruit signed letters of intent with three schools yesterday. D.J. Law sent letters of intent to Utah, Mississippi, and East Mississippi Community College. By rule whichever school verified his letter of intent first would hold his rights. The link believes that Mississippi will release Law from his scholarship because he will most likely end up at a junior college.
