Since the movie was deliberately made alagorical, symbols and certian special effects were used in a way to leave their meaning up to the viewer. Perhaps Kubrick's greatest special effect of all was a blank screen. What other way can we best describe the murky past to the very start of humanity, the apes view of the monolith, and their almost non existent thought process.

Lesser movies like "I Robot" and a million others merely borrow the notion that AI is possible but completely fail to address the character aspect.

There is no reason why an AI character cannot be interesting. Yet in nearly all sci-fi movies, they never are.

in fairness i, robot is based on the book i, robot which I'm pretty certain was written before 2001. and it also doesn't fail to recognize that AI can have character.

Agreed. And i robot was written in the late 1950s or early 60s. HAL's AI/ HAL was the main character in the trip to Jupiter. He was the center point and focal between Bowman and Poole.
