I imagine something like the original Star Trek TV series would also be cringeworthy on Blu due to the higher resolution.

Some of those older movies would lose some of the fantasy aspect if all the warts normally hidden at a lower resolution were revealed IMO.
I think this really depends on the transfer. To give some examples, Blade Runner looked pretty terrible on the DVD release, and of course VHS was very bad. However, they spent a few million dollars restoring it for the blu-ray eddition and it's one of the highest rated disks out there. Blade Runner Review. As for ST:TOS, I haven't seen it personnaly, but I think they went back and also did a very good restoration and even redid the the special effects shot with CGI to make it more "modern" but still fit the period in terms of special effects.

Of course, on the flip side are the dozens of titles that they take some poor source, then slap on a thick smear of DNR and release them without an afterthought. These unfortunately make me cringe!

Hi,
DTS on laserdisc can sound very good compared to DVD DTS , but Bluray DTS MA and Dolby True HD are far better sounding than DTS on laserdisc and can even best ,hi end 2 chan systems(cd) with the Multi Chan system 2 to 3 times plus the cost.

I have 3 systems,1 large HT system,1 small HT system($35k au) and another Hi end 2 chan system.Movie Bluray audio always suprises me with how great it sounds on the main (large) HT,concert Blurays are a different story.
Regards Victor.

As long as you have 1000 fps vision (which just requires a little training), you didn't miss a beat of the whole thing.

I was in the middle of reading it and went to the next page and it was gone.

To be honest I am not sure why this thread even exists. If people like certain aspects of the laserdisc, fine. But how on Gods green earth could you watch a LD over the BD version?

I get that you like LD but over BD? That sounds like someone is taking crazy pills.

You like analog? Get a record player. There is a huge niche market of players and shops around this. They still make records.

But I digress, if you like LD that is totally cool. Enjoy it. Just not sure how a sane person says that the LD is better than BD.

What?! They deleted a dinosaur joke too? This is getting out of hand.

Oh well. I wonder if they could edit out the bad bits and leave the good stuff for the entertainment value?

If you want to read what went down with the manic ramblings of either an unappreciated genius or a certified lunatic, the bulk of those posts are at least temporarily available in the Google cache:

I still watch and buy laserdisc's. The only reason I will watch a laserdisc over a blu-ray is the movie is not availible on blu, or the laserdisc is a different cut of the film. Example Star Wars or THX 1138.

WOW. I have to say that that gentleman was completely off his rocker. I've had Betamax, VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, HD-DVD and now Bluray and I have loved all of them. and at the moment Bluray is the best of them. Yes back in the 80's and early 90's Laserdisc was "the $hit". But to say that it is even comparable to what we have now is just right out of left field. I don't know what he is using to make his comparisons? but I use my eyes and ears and as far as I can tell Bluray is far superior to those early formats.

Although it's nice with LD when you don't have to put up with forever load times or 'we can't play this disc, please update your blu-ray player's firmware' etc. etc. issues that make Blu-ray so endearing...

I had Independence Day on laserdisc and the sound quality rocked!

However, I picked up ID4 on Blu-ray and the sound quality, totally blows away what was on the LD.

That opening scene, where
[Show spoiler]the massive alien spaceship roars over the moon, on its way
to earth,
just shakes my enter room and rattles the windows.

The LD version never did that.

Agreed the BD is a lot better, but the LD was no slouch in its day, it most certainly crushed the DD track on the DVD which sounded overly compressed by comparison. The best A-B comparison for this was the canyon scene.

I prefer the LD version of Talking Heads Stop Making Sense. I run it over my analog outs through my stereo amp.

For comparison I did the theatrical soundtrack from the Blu-ray which is the closest comparison you can have.

The Blu-ray sounds perfect. Too perfect. To me the LD sounds much more natural and like I'm actually at the concert.

Yes it does. Think of it like this. Someone could have the greatest plastic surgery every, their perfectly symmetrical face would look weird to most people, because everyone of our faces have natural imperfections.
