What the hell? I'm in Phoenix, where there's like 4 million people, and I haven't seen a single Blu-ray disc in a Wal-mart (they're still selling HD-DVD, though... those useless coasters seem to be available everywhere). In fact, the only place where I've seen anything more than a four-foot display is at Best Buy and Fry's (and the BB prices are absurd, while Fry's only has like a hundred copies of the same two movies). I've wasted many Saturdays trying to find Blu-rays, and this is a big city. For crying out loud, it's been two years, and I still have to order online and wait a week to get Blu-rays. Two years into DVD, they were selling them in the grocery stores.

At our local Walmart (St. C., OH) they got a HUGE shipment of library Blu-rays in last Monday and talking to an employee I know who works in the electronics section he told me they were officially expanding their Blu-ray display section in one week (i.e. TONIGHT).

Over the weekend I went to four different Walmarts in my local area (Florida pandhandle) looking for the new Samsung 1500 player. No luck on the player however, three out of the four were in the process of updating there overall electronics departments by adding several sections of catalog title blurays. Also, two of the four Walmarts actually had the new Magnavox bluray player in stock for $298. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come!

Stopped by Walmart tonight after being told they would have their re-set done by Monday night. WRONG.

What I saw was 4 empty sections of shelves and 2-3 BD and player signs laying on them. I'll wait until the weekend to see if those lazy bastards are finished.

Well when I went into work today we had our Blu Ray end cap display was up and we had our expanded Blu Ray section with Paramount titles. Our end cap had a Sony 300 BD player and a PS3 hooked up to a 46"(I believe) Sony Bravia 1080p LCD. The Bravia goes for around $1598 and the Sony BD player was $399 if I remember correctly. They were playing National Treasure on it.

Just got back from my Walmart, and I was VERY impressed. Their new planogram has an entire aisle for Blu-ray. They were still setting it up and getting the movies out, but here's what they had:

An endcap with a Sony 1080p LCD with a Sony BDP-S300 and a PS3 advertising Blu-ray.

In the aisle, they had:

3 8 foot sections of movies, at pretty good prices
  • Most of today's new releases (except V for Venedetta which is why I went)
  • National Treasure 1 & 2 for $24.96 each
  • Most of the older Paramount catalog back in stock (including Shooter and The Italian Job)
  • Better pricing than other B&M retailers: $24.96 for many new releases, only a couple of titles up at $29.96; most catalog titles under $20 (except for the Harry Potter movies)
4 Standalone players on display!
  • Magnavox (Funai) NB500 for $298
  • Samsung BD-P1500 for $348
  • Sony BDP-S300 for $388 or 398 (I think I saw two tags with different prices)
  • Panasonic BD30 for $449
All the players except the Panasonic were instock on the shelf as well. I spoke with the department manager briefly who was directing a couple of empoyees resetting the department. He said they were a high volume store so they had gotten a LOT of players in the last couple of weeks for the new display (mainly Magnavox and additional Sony's). They got a pretty good number of the Samsung but it had been selling well since they got them and were nearly out. The Panasonic's hadn't arrived yet, but are expected later this week.

He said lower volume stores probably wouldn't be getting the Panasonic player (at least initially), but that for the most part, the larger volume stores would carry all 4 models, and smaller stores would carry 3.

I'll try to go back later this week and get some pics once everything's finished being set, but, for those claiming Blu-ray has no shot at going mainstream... Wal-mart stores are stocking 4 different standalone players! If that's not mainstream, then I don't know mainstream.

My Wal-Mart expanded also. And they're back out of the Glass Case!!

Unfortunatly, looks like they're still waiting for shipments. As they haven't stocked much yet.
