Neil DeGrasse Tyson, on the other hand, just bleeds enthusiasm with every word he speaks.

The first episode was quite good, and I'm in for the long haul. Of course, Sunday evening is getting a bit crowded, so I'm watching a Sunday wee-hours slot on NatGeo. It's all good.

I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around the fact that Seth MacFarlane is one of the people behind this reboot.

Well I'm glad that u guys are watching it....hopefully more people tune in.

I watched Sagan's original a few times, but I think you will enjoy the original if you watch more than one episode. He is the farthest thing from being a dull speaker....quite the opposite is true. If you admired him so much then why did you only watch one episode of Sagan's original? What lectures have you heard from him that make you feel he is an unenthusiastic host?

If Carl Sagan was a boring host then how come COSMOS was such an astronomical success? I'm not trying to be argumentative, just voicing my own opinion, and defending one of the greatest scientists in recent history.

...but I'm pleased to see that you are enjoying the current re-boot.

Cheers

Disagree. He has a droning monotone that I find dull.

I thought I was pretty clear that I watched only an episode or two because I thought he was a dull speaker. I also explained why I admired him. I'd also read some of his books (such as the tie-in book, Cosmos, and The Dragons of Eden) and thought they were wonderful. But being able to write well doesn't necessarily equate to speaking well.

You don't need to "defend" him. I think he was a terrific scientist. He just wasn't enjoyable (for me) to listen to. Hell, I had a few brilliant college professors who were in the same boat. They knew their stuff, but their lectures could put one to sleep.

Well, we are all entitled to our opinion.

"he was a wonderfully idiosyncratic presenter, with a palpable enthusiasm for his field and a deep knowledge that he was excited to share."

any loyal Sagan fan would agree.

Neil's oratory presentation is so relaxed, I love how he explains it. You can tell how excited he is to tell you how what happens, but he maintains relaxed.

The visuals work so well his voice.

Also, Sci Channel changed show from Through the Wormhole to Beyond the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman.

They have new episode coinciding with Cosmos repeat airing.

Absolutely....a terrific host and role model for today's young scientists. But now Tyson is under attack by Creationist's who are demanding equal airtime on National TV.

Of course they are. I'm sure it wouldn't occur to them that Cosmos is on a for-profit, commercial network that wouldn't be required to offer equal airtime. If they want to spend the money to produce a show about Creationism or "Intelligent Design" or whatever they want to call it, and they can get a national broadcast network to air it, more power to them.

If there is an all powerful, all knowing God, why even need TV. Won't he just appear in the skies and declare himself!

Tyson should tell them to get their creationist research published in some independent science journals first (you know, the way ALL accepted science gets published).

The more they keep trying to preach creationism through political or financial means, the more they demonstrate that their creationist beliefs are not scientific.

Small-Minded Religious Fundamentalists feel threatened by COSMOS.....

GOOD!....they are repulsed by science and should really start to read books containing FACTS. The entire creationist fraternity should feel embarrassed, and give up on trying to brainwash the youth of today with their silly museum in Kentucky. What a waste

What is a "loyal Sagan fan"? A cult follower?

I loved the first two episodes.

Me too- I love your star wars posters, I'm a loyal Star Wars Fan. Does this make me a cult follower? LOL

Cult following becomes relevant when it has a small but very passionate fan base. Cosmos has a passionate fan base, but it is NOT small.

Enjoy the series..

I agree with you. Sagan is one of the most inspirational figures that I have ever come across. I loved his delivery, his voice, and his passion coupled with the music of Vangelis - I don't think there was ever a better match. Here is a video I made a few years ago -- it features various clips from the Cosmos series that I put together.

That's awesome---I REALLY hope more people tune in. Out of the " billions " of possible hosts....Carl Sagan had no equal.

My cousin graduated from Cornell not long after Carl's early demise. One of his main reasons for Choosing Cornell was the fact that Sagan worked on campus, in his own laboratory. A darn GOOD reason indeed if you ask me...

Creationists Demand Airtime On Neil deGrasse Tyson's 'Cosmos'

Quote:
Appearing on "The Janet Mefferd Show" on Thursday, Danny Faulkner of Answers In Genesis voiced his complaints about "Cosmos" and how the 13-episode series has described scientific theories, such as evolution, but has failed to shed light on dissenting creationist viewpoints. He said:

"I was struck in the first episode where [Tyson] talked about science and how, you know, all ideas are discussed, you know, everything is up for discussion –- it's all on the table -- and I thought to myself, 'No, consideration of special creation is definitely not open for discussion, it would seem.'

Tyson recently addressed providing balance when it comes to discussing science. In an interview with CNN, the astronomer criticized the media for giving "equal time" to those who oppose widely accepted scientific theories.

"I think the media has to sort of come out of this ethos that I think was in principle a good one, but doesn't really apply in science. The ethos was, whatever story you give, you have to give the opposing view, and then you can be viewed as balanced," Tyson said, adding, "you don't talk about the spherical earth with NASA and then say let's give equal time to the flat-earthers."
