I put 320gb in one of my PS3's recently and it shows as 298GB available to use.
I have another PS3 that will get the same treatment shortly. However, I will only use another 320GB drive. I'm actually going to buy an external My book Western Digital 1TB external for mass storage as it matches the PS3's black glossy finish. You only need internal storage for game data, movies and pictures. Storing music on there is a right pain in the ass. |

The PS3 doesnt recognize less space its a descrepancy in how a gigabyte is defined a la the company vs. what your computer/game console actually reads. There are tons of threads out there about this. If you bought the 320 GB hard drive and put it in a laptop you would get the same reading as with the PS3. Go read reviews on hard drives at newegg everyone says the same thing whether the drive was fir there computer or for the PS3. Theres no bug its just a difference in the definition of gigabyte.
Edit: Wikipedia says this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte "As of 2007, most consumer hard drives are defined by their gigabyte-range capacities. The true capacity is usually some number above or below the class designation. Although most manufacturers of hard disks and Flash disks define 1 gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes, the computer operating systems used by most users usually calculate a gigabyte by dividing the bytes (whether it is disk capacity, file size, or system RAM) by 1,073,741,824. This distinction is a cause of confusion, as a hard disk with a manufacturer rated capacity of 400 gigabytes may have its capacity reported by the operating system as only 372 GB, depending on the type of report. The difference between units based on SI and binary prefixes increases exponentially — in other words, an SI kilobyte is nearly 98% as much as a kibibyte, but a megabyte is under 96% as much as a mebibyte, and a gigabyte is just over 93% as much as a gibibyte. This means that a 500 GB hard disk drive would appear as "465 GB". As storage sizes get larger and higher units are used, this difference will become more pronounced." Theres much more on the subject via the link. Hope this answered the question about the difference. Edit #2: I have a 320 GB drive myself and doing the math described in the article if you take 320,000,000,000 divided by 1,073,741,824 you get 298.023 yada yada yada.. so the article is dead on. For those worried a bout 7200 vs 5400, the difference is rather insignificant. I wouldn't worry about it either way.
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/10/02/...s-performance/ That should get you started, but you can always google for more. |

In the same exact conditions, at the most, 7200rpm drives can get about 5 degrees warmer. But that is almost nothing. typically they are only 2 or 3 degrees warmer. Also conisder that ambient temperature and environment have way more affect. for example, a 5400rpm in the warmth of the afternoon can be warmer than a 7200rpm in the morning.
the only thing to really worry about is possibly a bit more noise/vibration. In this regard, Seagate is usually considered the best (see: no big difference) |
