Like someone mentioned, it all depends on tastes, but I would say this would be a good variety of titles to start off with.

Vincent Price Collection - Classic gothic horror films. Corman, Poe and Price, you can't go wrong.

Halloween 3 - Used to be underrated, but this film's greatness has been pretty much agreed upon now. Nothing like the rest of the slasher series that follows Michael Myers killing teens. This one is more of a mystery/ body snatchers type flick with one of the best horror scores out there. Not to mention the really cool masks, great atmosphere, and Tom "The 'Stache" Atkins!

The Fog / Prince of Darkness / They Live - In my opinion, you can't go wrong with Carpenter, and these are some of his best. What's great as well, is that they are all completely different in tone and style. The Fog is amazing, a great campfire ghost tale. Prince of Darkness has a very apocalyptic feel, that just oozes with atmosphere, and has this unnerving building tension throughout. And They live is just a fun action horror comedy with wrestler Roddy Piper spewing out one liners and kicking alien butt.

The Howling - One of the best werewolf flicks in my opinion, Directed by horror great Joe Dante, and with some of the best monster effects on celluloid.

Phantasm 2 - Tone is much different than the nightmarish first film, this time going for more of an 80s action horror feel, which amounts to a lot of fun! Seeing the first film first isn't a requirement, but I think it would help it all make a little more sense.

Halloween 2 / The Burning - Two really good slashers. The Burning has that great campfire feel, while Halloween 2 I'm sure you know what tot expect.

Terror Train - Another really good slasher, this time with the killer attacking teens on a train. What makes this film so much fun, is it's during a New Year's costume party, so the killer is constantly changing his appearance. Plus it stars a young Jamie lee!

Psycho 2/ Psycho 3 - Surprisingly good sequels to Hitchcock's masterpiece, especially the second film. Part 3 is still good, but becomes more of a standard 80s slasher film.

Night of the Demons - Fun movie about a bunch of teens trapped in a house on Halloween, of course full of demons.

From Beyond - Stuart Gordon (Director of Re-Animator) crazy weird sexual sci-fi adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft tale. If you love gooey effects, this is a great choice.

OTHER

These flicks are also worth a look, although I would grab the titles mentioned above first.

Day of the Dead - This would probably be on the first list if it didn't already have a decent Blu-ray release from Anchor Bay. Tom Savini's effects are the star of this zombie flick, the third part of Romero's dead trilogy, although none of them are really connected story wise. The acting isn't the best though, there's lots of yelling, and the setting is rather drab, but it's still one of the better zombie flicks out there.

Town That Dreaded Sundown - Creepy serial killer flick based on a true story. Kind of done in the vain of a re-enactment documentary, like something you would have seen on Unsolved Mysteries. Some added comedy elements hurt it a little, but overall pretty effective horror flick.

Death Valley - Decent little horror gem starring the kid from a Christmas Story about a serial killer in a desert setting. Slower paced film, but it has some really good cat and mouse chase scenes including one at an old western town resort.

TerrorVision / Video Dead - A stacked disc with lots of value for its price. TerrorVision is a zany horror comedy, but I thought The Video Dead was pretty bad.

Lifeforce - Fun 80s special effects driven sci-fi flick directed by Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) about a space vampire that wrecks havoc on Earth. If you are a straight male, it doesn't hurt that the vampire is a hot brunette that runs around nude most of the film.

Body Bags - This flick would be the wild card, as I really enjoy it but seem to be in the minority. If you enjoy fun but harmless anthology flicks, you should get a kick out of this one. I especially love the cameo appearance by John Carpenter as the horror host in between the segments.

I couldn't find any evidence of an MGM VHS. I know there was a Live Home Video VHS release under the Endless Descent title. Live was one of Lionsgate's predecessor companies.

[Show spoiler]

It also shows up in a 2005 security interest temination filing at the United States Copyright Office. It's listed under Artisan, presumably because the original security interest filing was filed prior to the Lionsgate takeover of Artisan.

Amazon does have it listed as The Rift with MGM via Amazon Instant Video, so it's possible the title has changed hands at some point. The Outing, aka The Lamp, was another title that would have seemed likely to be a Lionsgate title based on previous home video lineage, but that's in MGM's library too, so who know, really?

I could have sworn a month ago, there was an Amazon Exclusive VHS from MGM under the The Rift title.

Yeah, I completely agree. That definitely helps out someone like me who has never seen any of these titles other than Halloween III (I think).

I just posted a wanted to buy/trade thread in the trading forum for any of the Scream titles you all are willing to part with after seeing them one or two times and want to just get rid of them.

Thanks again everyone!!

What's with this "halloween III is now widely considered great" comment? None of the negative reviews I ever saw focused on the missing Michael Myers, they were pretty fairly judging it on its own terms. It seemed to be mainly slasher fans that were mad about that. I personally enjoyed it the times I watched it (it's certainly better than 4-8!) but I thought of it as one of those "so bad it's good" movies. It seemed very low-rent and the story seemed really haphazard (ex, the head-crushing robots seemed like they were transplanted in from a different movie). I guess I should watch it again more closely? It's the kind of movie where the extras are probably almost as entertaining as the movie, so I should probably get this disc.

Good post, though. I'd pretty much agree with that, though I might move lifeforce into the top category. It's not really a good movie but it's one of the most wildly ambitious and bizarre big-budget sci-fi movies I've ever seen. "The Howling" is the scream factory disc I have that I like the most.

Agreed, its a really underrated movie and unfortunately Scream Factory's blu ray did little to change that.

I loved Prison. It's (in all seriousness) deserving of cult classic status. It should have spun off into a huge franchise, it has all the makings of an epic 80s horror brand but never stuck on the radar for some reason?

Yes I was, thought I would try and start a "discussion" about early horror films in the careers of now "big time" stars. And in truth I had totally forgotten Viggo was in 3 until I just read this. Oh well, can't remember everything.

Savage Streets will be without the features from previous dvds though. (I feel like I've mentioned that enough times that I'm officially b!tching about it ). Quality-wise, it should be fantastic!

But The Redeemer: Son of Satan (Class Reuinion Massacre) is coming from Code Red too!
