Hi everyone, I'm looking at possibly buying a new receiver here soon. I'm looking at the Sony STR-DG810. It seems to have what I want. Just a couple of questions though. Do you guys think that Sony makes good receivers? The other is I've noticed that Fox studios is making all of their BD's encoded with DTS-HD sound. Now I know that there are no receivers out there currently that have this decoder in them but can this Sony receiver at least give me 5 channel surround sound since it has a few DTS decoders in it?

I've seen that Sony's ES stuff has gotten good reviews, but I agree - Onkyo or Denon, can't lose.
But I would wait just a little longer, receivers w/updated specs (i.e. HDMI version 1.3) are starting to trickle out to market...... |

Sony made good receivers back in the day, like the late 80's and early 90's, before Sony stopped innovating their products. Ever since the early 90's I have only bought Onkyo receivers such as their first generation THX receiver the TX-SV828THX and thier first AC-3 decoder the ED-901. Ever since I have never bought anything other than Onkyo and am looking forward to upgrading my current TX-SR703 to thier new TX-SR805 .

The new Sony ES amps are not great at all. It will prop only sound decent if you have very efficient speakers. Even so, you can do a lot better else where. The only thing the new ES has going for it is the HDMI 1.3 and a very good room calibration system that uses two mics to triangulate setup.

Thanks for all of the input guys. Zaphod, I was looking at Onkyo's website and was looking at that TX-SR805. That thing looks sweet and does have all of the goodies. I guess my question right now would have to be how much is this thing going to cost? Do you have any ideas?

The price: $999.99, look at this way it is under $1000. ![]() Here is a link to crutchfield.com http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Kee68Xu...p?i=580TXS805B However once it is released, you will probably be able to find it for cheaper. You could probably find it for around $799 to $899 somewhere else. Keep an eye on ebay. Remember in home electronics, specifically home audio, the markup is substantial usually 75-100%. Thanks for info Zaphod. I did see a similar model to this called the TX-SR805S. Do you know what the difference is between this one and just the TX-SR805?

without going into the ohms, there is nothing out yet. sherwood, onkyo, and pioneer have things in the pipe and afaik denon has something debuting very soon as well.

BTW, the ES has HDMI 1.2. Maybe the new line will have HDMI 1.3 in the future. |
