Default First Indy and now...JACK RYAN???!!

Cinemablend.com has a scoop that if all goes well with Indy, Harrison Ford just may slip into the comfortable shoes of Jack Ryan again:

Quote:
It’s been a while since we’ve heard any movement on the Jack Ryan franchise. When we last left it in January, rumors were flying that producers were looking at a younger Jack Ryan, with Ryan Gosling being the favored actor for the role and Sam Raimi in negotiations with Paramount to develop and direct a series of movies with the Tom Clancy character. Remember, however, that all of this movement was without Clancy or the franchise’s long time director Phillip Noyce, basically getting a fresh start on a reboot.

It appears that months-old news may not be quite so correct anymore. This weekend’s big blockbuster may mean a change in approach toward Jack Ryan. If Harrison Ford can dazzle audiences with his whip, he just might be ready to tackle the part of Ryan again as well, at least that’s what we’re being told by an inside source.

From what we’ve been told, the plan was indeed to take Ryan younger, but a successful older Indiana Jones adventure may change that plan. Of course, as of right now Raimi would be expected to have final say, although the news that he was in negotiations is from January and nothing solid ever materialized to tell us the deal was worked out.

So, keep in mind when you see Indiana Jones this weekend that your ticket may have just paved the way for Harrison Ford to return to another role. I have to admit, I kind of like that idea though. For an older Jack Ryan, the filmmakers might be more inclined to stick to Tom Clancy’s source material, as the author has already written several novels as the character has aged. I’m all for sticking to the source novels rather than branching out independently without the creator’s involvement.
I for one, would love to see Harrison do Jack Ryan again. It's not the stunt heavy kind of roll that would make you think he were too old to do it. He was the best Jack Ryan after all... (IMO)

If Crystal Skull does well enough, they will.

That would definitely make me want to go see it again. I was expecting to want to see it at least three or four times, but I'm kind of hesitant to even go see it twice.

I will go see it twice. The first time I had all the pent up expectations. Now I can watch it and judge it for what it is. I think I'll watch Crusade before I see it again though.

I thought about doing that, but I was afraid it may make it worse. I'll go see it again, definitely, but I was expecting to feel like I HAVE to see it again, and I don't, which crushes my spirits a bit.

Would be great to have another Jack Ryan film starring Harrison Ford. Sum of All Fears was ok but not that great. Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan was simply a bad choice. It didn't even make sense on a basic historical timeline compared to the other 3 films. Hence, if they were to make at least one more film starring that character, Harisson Ford would be the man. Alec Baldwin was good in Hunt for Red October but Harrison Ford nailed that character perfectly.

Harrison Ford ruined Patriot Games. He put me to sleep with his groaning, monotonous voice. What was up with that? Rumor had it that he was grumpy about getting "Only" $20 million for the role instead of Alec Baldwin, who was asking for an RV that cost only $2 million in addition to his acting fee of $5 million. Hollywood, they really stink at math sometimes.

If they make another Jack Ryan film with Ford, I will not even watch the TRAILERS.

I've read the older Jack Ryan novels, here they are for anyone that wants to look them up:

Debt of Honor
Executive Orders
The Bear and the Dragon

Doing a movie of those is basically an Air Force One performance, that is pretty much what would be required. Ford might be 10 years older than the character is at the start of the first book, but there's no action roles for Jack Ryan in these books. There's a lot of action, but not for Jack Ryan.

Done right they'd make great movies, but given the way they changed Sum of All Fears for the big screen I have serious doubts. These movies would 'offend'
[Show spoiler]Japan, Iran, India, and China
. They would also have to ignore the current history of the
[Show spoiler]Iraq war or portray an American withdrawal in a story that would make a case against American withdrawal
.

I'd much rather see them do a reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise that do another one with Harrison Ford. Wouldn't it be great to see like 3 (or more) movies done with the same actor that stick a little bit closer to Clancy's actual timeline?

Actually I think the older Ryan books (the ones dealing with the Soviet Union) are probably too dated for a reboot now. Debt of Honor and onward are still relatively current, but they're based on a timeline in which no second Iraq war has taken place. Honestly though, Clancy is my favorite writer, but I would rather they never make another Jack Ryan film in movie history than make another insulting pile of crap like Sum of All Fears. The thought of them taking three favorite books of mine and rewriting them to be politically safe instead of geopolitically relevant makes me sick. Plus the climax of the trilogy, at the end of the first book, I don't see them ever putting on the big screen (
[Show spoiler]Think 9/11, but Clancy wrote it before 9/11
).

I don't see any reason why the Russian stuff still wouldn't work... it's just a movie, so it doesn't really have to agree with the current political climate. I agree about the end of Debt of Honor, that might be tough to use at least for a while.

I'm talking about redoing Patriot Games and Hunt for Red October, with Red Rabbit and Cardinal of the Kremlin worked in between and after them respectively.

Plus, it'd be great to see them to do a Without Remorse. They could use the same actor for Ryan and Clark since it takes place only ten years or so before Patriot Games.

I agree with you that it could work, and is probably more friendly to the big screen than the epic scale of the latter books. I just don't think a Jack vs USSR series of movies would be much of a money maker these days. The later three would make a great epic scale trilogy... but I don't see them treating it right. I don't know, I've been burned by Hollywood so many times I don't think I have the capacity to trust them to make a Clancy novel with any degree of intellectual honesty.
