Default What's so good about widescreen?

Not trying to be ignorant or start any arguments, I just don't see why people want widescreen when you're watching a movie. Why? Wouldn't you just prefer a movie that fits your entire TV screen, with no black bars, so you can see more details?

Since you could simply do a search for "black bars" and pull up hundreds of threads on this site, I'll save you the time and link to one of the most recent.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ack+bars%5C%22

And when you're done with that, the Digital Bits has a good one too

this is starting to get old. look plain and simple people like widescreen b/c there isnt pan and scan meaning you get the entire picture where as "full screen" the sides are cut off and in some movies important parts get left out of the picture. BUT I THINK THAT most people that like the picture to fill up the screen mean that they like 1.85:1 meaning animorphic widescreen, fills up the entire screen and the sides arernt left out/no pan and scan just a full picture with nothing cut off. so yea i like 1.85:1 aswell but at the same time i dont hate blackbar movies.

if im wrong please tell me but as far as i know 1:85.1 is not pan and scan, its the entire film sides and all just without the bars on top. so if thats true then that is what blackbars haters want 1.85:1 movies across the board.

Yeah, you miss out on like 40% of the film in full screen.

I simply can't believe that this massive ignorance is still around 10+ years after DVD was introduced.

What the hell have you been watching for the last 10 years if Widescreen is just bothering you now??

Obviously watching full screen. I'm amazed the industry panders to this ignornace and still makes full screen dvd's. Especially since the player settings could do that for you.

And I thought I was doing something smart for buying only widescreen DVD's.

They still do because some people just not satisfied unless the cover say FULL SCREEN and majority of the population in dvd land not as bright as we are and know about the functions to be able to change this on their settings and i bet the FULL SCREEN sells more than WIDESCREEN (my opinion no fact proof) based on how many people you hear complain about full screen. You never hear someone complain that the picture is in FULL SCREEN and not WIDESCREEN

the director did not intend for you to view the film, in a square.

I think that widescreen offers a better composition for the director to get his vision across. It allows you to do more visually.
