On that note, I've heard the question asked elsewhere - why is it necessary to have Sansa be the carrier of the poison? Would Lady Olenna herself not have been able to carry the stone on her person?

Probably because they don't know that Littlefinger is one of the people who constructed the plan. Since he's not there at the moment Sansa is the closest tie to Lady Olenna. Just my thought

I was going to post those images in the main GOT thread, but didn't know if that was considered a spoiler even though it's played out in the actual episode.

I can't wait for when Littlefinger pushes his wife out the door over the cliff. It was such a shock that I think it'll be great in the show. How far away is that anyway? I'm into the fifth book and it's getting to be a bit of a slog. I miss all the Stannis Baratheon stuff from a bit earlier.

I think not necessary at all, and it was unnecessary risk as well. Just that the book(or Martin) wants to make Littlefinger evil genius with elaborate plans. I doubt in real like any of his plans would've worked.
Those poison crystals or stones couldn't been attached too firmly, otherwise Sansa would've noticed Olena pulling real hard on her head to dislodge one. Which in turn means, poisoned crystals could've fallen off or better yet, fall into someone else's food prematurely, including Sansa's own food.
Aside from that, it's really pointless to hang poison on someone unsuspecting/uninvolved and count that poisoner will be able to snatch the package from the "mule" w/o being noticed, let alone dropping poison into that goblet in the middle of the ceremony.
What if Sansa lost it, or decided to wear something else...

That's exactly what Littlefinger knew.

That still doesn't answer Aragorn's question of why Olenna couldn't just bring the poison to the reception herself. It's not as if everyone in attendance was being frisked in search of concealed weapons.

The only explanation that kinda sorta makes sense is that Olenna might've felt that Sansa deserved to be a part of Joffrey's assassination, however unwittingly.

It's the question of being caught. Sansa brings the poison to the feast unwittingly, but if someone had recognized the poison, either in the necklace or from the effects on Joffrey, they would think Sansa poisoned him. She certainly had plenty of motive, making it unlikely they would believe she was a patsy.

But that doesn't jibe with Littlefinger's plan for Sansa. After all, he'd already arranged for Dontos to secret Sansa away from the reception. All of that would've been ruined if there was any possibility of Sansa being taken into custody as Joffery's assassin.

True, but better to have another fall guy if your first one evades capture, then to be captured yourself. As much as Littlefinger might relish his plans for Sansa's future, he values his own life much higher.

Now that I think about it, this may be Littlefinger's thought process. Given his feelings for Cat, it makes sense that he would have felt Sansa should have a hand in it.

That makes no sense, if he actually wanted to get Sansa out of red keep. After king's assassination Sansa would've been suspect #1 or #2 at best. Counting on the improbable odds of clumsy fool like Dontos to get Sansa away in the confusion caused by king's death is silly at best.
In any other show or book that's more like setting up Sansa to take a fall for poisoning. Cersei might've yelled take "them" (Tyrion + Sansa) instead of "him".
In fact, Sansa is a suspect later on, and if she didn't do her very lucky getaway with Dontos, she'd be in the same boat with Tyrion.

And if Sansa does flee with Dontos, she'll always be under suspicion of been part of conspiring to kill Joffrey. So she's gained another target on her back whilst remaining completely innocent!

I really did enjoy seeing that little shit choke.

Although that's not enough payback for using Ros as target practice! They should have laced the pie with one of her red-hairs ...

My favorite part was when Joffery is choking and everybody is just staring at him. Then Olena of all people yells "You Idiots! Help your king!" And that's when Jamie jumps into action. Then Tyrion is looking tottally dumbfounded at the cup.

I was secretly hoping for Oberyn to start clapping, and say, "Now, that's entertainment!"

Because everyone was in shock: "Could my dream actually be coming true?"

I'm a little disappointed they left out Coldhands as I figured he would be important in the future books.
