Please politely respond with just ‘pass’ and keep that sort of information under your sombrero.

I do want a 2.35:1 CIH projector setup at some point when my job situation steadies a bit, but as it seems that OLED projectors are not happening and CRT ones are limited to 4:3 and 1080i, I may have to debase myself by allowing LCD display technology in my house.
“Debase”

4k OLED tvs are comparatively quite expensive esp. for those having a tenuous job situation and I don’t expect the OLED adoption rate (regardless of the resolution) to dramatically change for quite awhile. Which brings me to a little known upstream (in mastering facilities) ‘debasing’ fact about OLED and LCDs , which may rile up current and future OLED owners even more…..

You see, because the vast, vast majority of consumers watch content on LCD tvs, high end facilities that use professional OLED monitors for mastering material, have the colorist use a LUT to purposely limit the contrast (to around 1500:1) in order that he doesn’t crush the detail in the grade. So, in other words, even though content is being mastered on OLED professional monitors in some facilities, consumer OLED owners are not getting the full potential of what the OLED grading could be, due to the fact that LCDs rule in consumers’ homes.

Interesting gents that's for sure. It actually made me watch "Side by Side" tonight, another very well made doc. Already a bit long in the tooth (that's when you realize how blindingly fast things are moving along) but interesting to hear both sides and why they believe in what they do.

Thanks for the info. That makes me hate LCD technology all the more. My purity is at stake here! Is this contrast limiting done for the DI or DCP, or is this for home consumption? Is the Rec 709 color space for HD content limited in this manner? Considering how easily LCD displays (especially the cheap ones) show inaccurate colors and have poor contrast, it really makes me wonder what the image would look like on such a display if the contrast wasn't intentionally limited. To me, this is the video equivalent of the old Dynagroove process that RCA used on records to purposefully limit the dynamic range and mess with the EQ to compensate for the poor performance of cheap record players. Isn't there some way to do this on the playback end of things, like how a TV can apply DNR by itself?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynagroove

I have not had a chance to see the new Fargo TV show yet, but I am planning on watching the pilot this weekend. The accent is a bit overdone for the movie (you need to go very far up north to hear that level of accent), but overall it does capture the midwestern demeanor very well and the cinematography is excellent as is almost everything that Deakins does. I also like movies set in wintertime. It was fun seeing Minneapolis in a movie and other locations that I have been to in person. I also like how the Coen brothers are from MN and placed Brainerd south of Minneapolis when in reality it's a good 3 hours north of it.

Sacked I believe. I think the failure to finish in the top 4 affects his compensation although I certainly don't know that for certain. Just what I have read. I understand he will receive around 1 million. Think that is correct.

For home consumption as previously described, whereas for theatrical cinema presentation (DCI compliant digital projectors), the LUT is opened up a bit more to about 2500:1 or 3000:1 contrast range….still hamstringing what could be.

There are some next gen projectors that will solve this problem.

IMHO, good acting and good writing. Also it’s different than 90% of TV series (predictably boring with predictable characters and predictable plots), which I find tedious to watch, not to mention, some of which give me eye strain due to the shaky cam effect. Honestly, some of the ‘action’ TV shows these days, I can only watch on a 55” screen…nothing larger, because of that particular *creative* look.
