Default Nielsen Sales Data W/E 5/13 62%/38%

Some early data released:

On the high-def disc front, 62% of the discs purchased by consumers the week ended May 13 were Blu-ray, while 38% were HD DVD. Warner’s Planet Earth was the top seller on all three high-def disc charts: Blu-ray, HD DVD and blended.

This from a story about the 5/06 numbers, but there's a good quote in the story about how PE is selling best for both formats.

Here's the quote: Though the Blu-ray format led overall in market share for the week (60% to HD DVD’s 40% of sales), the HD DVD version of Planet Earth took the top title spot, perhaps due to fewer title options for HD DVD buyers.

I love that. Yes it's selling more, because their supporters have nothing else to buy, unlike BD, which just keeps releasing. I love that quote.

I just like the way the story, right in the headline, tries to spin 62% to 38% as a "split decision".

It is really interesting that titles like Catch and Release do 'ok' in disc sales and rentals when they did nothing in the cinema... that has always fascinated me.

In any case, some weeks ago I said (on AVS) that I believed that the split was around 60/40 and that would hold on slow weeks - last week and this week are right around that number. I really don't see HD DVD every doing much better than this unless they manage a huge title in a week with none for BD.

Of course next week could be a lot different!

I see a couple of weeks like that during the summer. HD DVD fans are going to lose their minds during those times (and the MS paid media).

Same here, but it's probably because guys were able to convince their old ladies to not see it in theatres, because it's a chic flick, then, when it's out to rent/own, they get it to appease the old lady. That way she won't ***** as much about the home theater taking up to much money and time. Throw a dog a bone, you know. It's sort of like Kate Winslet's breasts in Titanic. Cameron knew guys were going to have to sit through the movie, so he threw us a bone so we wouldn't ***** too much.

Recently HMM has been including a normalized (#1 == 100) HD disc top 10 as well as the top 5 for each format.

For example
