George Washington is a modern masterpiece. Of all the directors to blatantly crib Terrence Malick's style, DGG did it the best with that film.

Joe was not particularly great, especially in contrast to Prince Avalanche, but Green is slowly returning to form with these two most recent films. It's great to have one of America's most promising auteurs back on the right track.

My nominee would be Andrew Dominik and his The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It's really a shame that the Blu-ray presentation is not better in all three categories.

Another great film, but one that I have only seen once. It would definitely be up there though. It's leagues ahead of Beasts of the Southern Wild/Ain't Them Bodies Saints or any other Sundance film from the last few years that has attempted the same thing (bar Upstream Color).

It's a shame Killing Them Softly didn't turn out so well. His next project really intrigues me though.

Upstream Color is incredible - as is Primer >.< such a talented guy to act, score, write, direct and film his work. Criterion should grab these two films for the collection :P

I wouldn't order from them because they ended a sentence with a demonstrative pronoun and began another sentence with a conjunction.

Reminds me of the old Woody Allen short story where he's talking about the hostilities of a woman and remarks: "her hostilities should be directed at people who begin sentences with 'basically' "

Default Best Foreign Language Films Released by Criterion

Out of curiousity I looked up which Special Honorary/Best Foreign Language films have been released by Criterion. I learned that a Special Honorary Oscar was given to foreign films from 47-55 and the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar has been awarded from 56-present.

Criterion has released or will be soon releasing the following award nominees/winners on DVD or Blu-ray:

The Bicycle Thief (DVD)
Rashomon (Blu)
Forbidden Games (DVD)
Gate of Hell (Blu)
Samurai I (Blu)
La Strada (DVD) Award Winner
The Burmese Harp (DVD)
Nights of Cabiria (DVD) Award Winner
Mon Oncle (DVD) Award Winner
Black Orpheus (Blu) Award Winner
The Virgin Spring (DVD) Award Winner
Through a Glass Darkly (DVD) Award Winner
8 1/2 (Blu) Award Winner
Knife in the Water (DVD)
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Blu)
Woman in the Dunes (DVD)
The Shop on Main Street (DVD) Award Winner
Kwaidan (DVD)
The Battle of Algiers (Blu)
Loves of a Blonde (DVD)
Closely Watched Trains (DVD) Award Winner
The Fireman's Ball (DVD)
Z (DVD) Award Winner
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (Blu) Award Winner
Dodes' ka-den (DVD)
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (DVD) Award Winner
Amarcord (Blu) Award Winner
Lacombe, Lucien (DVD)
That Obscure Object of Desire (DVD)
The Tin Drum (Blu) Award Winner
Kagemusha (Blu)
The Last Metro (Blu)
Coup de Torchon (DVD)
Fanny and Alexander (Blu) Award Winner
Babette's Feast (Blu) Award Winner
Au Revoir, Les Enfants (Blu)
Before the Rain (DVD)
Revanche (Blu)
The Great Beauty (Blu) Award Winner

This information is available on Wikipedia (hopefully, it's accurate). The films are listed in chronological order. I plan to suggest the following titles that are currently without a Blu-ray release to Criterion:

A Man and A Woman-1966 Award Winner
Day for Night-1973 Award Winner
Character-1997 Award Winner

It is arguably the best movie about making movies out there!

Agreed. Day for Night is a favorite of mine. It has to receive a Blu-ray release at some point. A Criterion edition would be nice for sure.

I'm going back to The Twilight Zone this weekend. When I bought the Complete Series box set last year, I enjoyed watching the first three seasons all in a row, but got distracted by other purchases after I started Season 4. I've already seen all five seasons a few times by way of my old DVD set, so it's just a matter of revisiting the episodes in the last two seasons and being wowed by how great they look on Blu-ray.

In my OCD mindset...
I have to finish watching the Blu-rays of the last two seasons of The Twilight Zone before I can start watching my Buster Keaton Collection Blu-rays.
I have to finish The Buster Keaton Collection before I can start watching my Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman Blu-ray set.

I just watched the 1966 short film included, Emotion, and it was really out there, IMO.

After I do some things around here, I'm going to throw in House. I don't think I'll like it, but I won't know until I watch it.

The Twilight Zone is one of my favourite shows ever. Season 4 is really interesting with the 50 minute episode approach but IMO it's the least great season (what? am I going to call a season of TZ "worst"? No way). Seasons 1-3 are all excellent overall, Season 5 definitely has the most bad episodes but it also has numerous outstanding ones. Season 4 has a couple of very good episodes but most of them are dragged out two times too long and are forgettable.

That's not just me critisizing the hour long format. Rod and his writers said the same thing when they were told if they wanted to stay on TV they needed to become an hour long show. The studio producers were told that TZ is a half hour show. It doesn't work at an hours length and while it kind of does a few times, it generally doesn't. It's no surprise it became a half hour show again for season 5.

Its so out there lol but I have to recommend it to people to watch, its one of those movies where you just have tell your friends about the craziness of it.

I started to film me unboxing it and posting a video but I was feeling a little to self conscious plus about my deep voice

This film contains everything I hate, cheese, bad special effects etc etc lol

But its in my top 10 its incredible! its such a moving story and the cheese is what propels the films forward - it also puts you in the mind of a Japanese girl if that makes sense haha.

Its such a sad film, and the experimental special effects, which are pretty rough - work so well and are amazing - its just so out there and director wasn't scared to try and experiment.

Wasn't the original story from his daughter or something?

And the films cover art is so memorable and strong

Brilliant film
