Good for him. I hope he does well for the Rams (even if he didn't get drafted, I'm pretty sure many teams would have given him a call to sign him). Even though I'm not gay, as a minority I can sympathize with discrimination he might have been facing. Also, I like cheering for the underdog from time to time. I would have been glad if he was drafted by my Giants.

I'm surprised a really gay friendly city like San Francisco or Atlanta didn't pick him up a little sooner. Would have been a ton of jersey sales for a late round pick.

As for the weed argument it is 100% right that he be suspended for this. While it may be legal in some states, guess what federal law supersedes state law in this regard and weed is still classified illegal under United States federal law.

He knew the rules when he signed that contract it is his responsibility to adhere to them as a player in the NFL.
No one knows the details of his drug violations. He claims he was prescribed the cough syrup and no one can prove otherwise. Your confusing government law with nfl rules and regulations. The nfl has no mandate from the federal government that requires them to have such harsh punishments nor should that ever happen.

I agree that he knew he rules and he failed to follow them and now he has to face the consequences but the whole idea the the nfl is looking out for player safety by having such stringent policy's against marijuana is aburd. The nfl acares about one thing and one thing and one thing only... Their lisence to print money. Otherwise players would have health insurance for life after they are done playing.

Most Falcons fans are outside of the "gay friendly" areas.

They don't need a mandate from the federal government. His union signed a collectively bargained agreement with the NFL. He is subject to that agreement, plain and simple. As far as proving anything, it isn't the responsibility of the NFL to do so. He failed the drug test. Even if he was prescribed the drug that doesn't mean anything if it isn't stated in the CBA. Unless the CBA violates any local, state or federal laws than the NFL is free to issue punishment based upon the agreed upon CBA.

Yes because believe it or not the NFL is a non profit organization, no BS that is there actual tax code. Just like any job they have to comply by federal mandates, as for health insurance like anything else they can now be covered under Obamacare. Sadly were arguing semantics here which is not my point nor intention. Understand I am not saying whether this is right or wrong, I am simply stating these are the NFL rules that all 32 teams and players must abide by.

Personally what I believe in terms of the drug does not matter, but look at it this way in 1995 the United States made a profit of 32 Million dollars off Marijuana, It brings in more then double the amount of money the 2nd most popular crop in the United States brings in which is corn at 16 Million Dollars. Yes these figures are 20 years old, they are also public record as debated by a session of congress at that time. I am sure that with inflation and corn being changed to E85 figures are slightly different now, but the point is there is no way this "drug" will ever be legalized anytime soon by the federal government. Now I have not researched it since I graduated High School about 17 years ago so I do not have updated figures but as long as this is the case the NFL can use it as an excuse to abide by.

Tax codes and a potential mandate from the federal government telling the nfl that they need to have such harsh drug rules are two different things. If such a thing existed then the government wouldn't allow mcdonalds to employ potheads to serve the masses their slop without the threat of year long suspensions hanging over their heads. If your saying that such rules exist for nonprofits and the nfl is in fact nonprofit (which is one of the craziest things I've ever heard in my life if true) then ok.

I'm simply saying that the excuse that they are looking out for player safety with those rules is kind of silly. They throw players back in the game with severe head injures and after they are done playing they send them on their merry way. The whole game is predicated around violence. Nfl didn't give a crap about their players before Obamacare and if Obamacare didn't exist right now they wouldn't say hey lets do the right thing and take care of our players. They had decades to prove otherwise.

What's right and fair and what the rules say are in many cases 2 very different things.

That's my problem with it as well. No one can deny his courage to come out prior to the draft, but the thing is NFL scouts already knew about it. It wasn't a secret in the football world. But the fact of the matter is Michael Sam likely isn't going to be a very good NFL player. Unless he can find a niche as a strong special teamer, he is unlikely to make the Rams final roster. He is someone that was very productive at the collegiate level, but he really struggled in both the NFL Combine as well as his pro day. His numbers were quite poor. The media attention is going way overboard. I could understand it if he was projected to be a good NFL player, but he isn't. There are obviously gay players in the NFL that are household names. Michael Sam isn't going to be an NFL star. With the attention this is getting, you'd think Aaron Rodgers came out.

It's getting the attention that it should get. First openly gay football player selected in the draft.

I'm not trying to start anything here. It's only because it seems one of the most level-headed analysts on ESPN, Jemele Hill, agrees with me here that I bring it up. I honestly want to know.

I love football. Seriously, when the Pack are playing, there's little else I can focus on. It's a great game. But why is the draft so popular? Even if a team has a draft that is just ridiculously "good", they end up like the '09 Jets: not SB champs. It's not football, it's not even really getting ready to play football. It's picking 1-7 or more dudes, half of which may not make the final roster, to be a part of a 53-man roster who more than likely won't end up doing anything that year anyway.

I'm not saying I don't pay attention to it. It's just when there is NBA and NHL playoffs going on, actual sporting events, and every bit of coverage you see is of a sport months away from actually beginning... it just bothers me a little.

I'd like to know some of your guy's reasoning for liking it though.
