Also, The Last Seduction is due September 15th in UK, courtesy of Network.

Network are making a name for themselves. Absolutely adore this film and am already counting down the weeks until it's released. I'm sure Network will do it a service and give it a damn fine transfer because the DVD is awful.

Le Samourai (DVD)
Le Cercle Rouge
Bob Le Flambuer (DVD)
Rififi
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi (DVD)

Actually, I consider Rifif to be a classic film noir, as opposed to a neo noir.

As far as Asian films go, these are great noirs...

Pale Flower
Stray Dog (DVD)
Drunken Angel (DVD)

Also Eclipse 17: Nikkatsu Noir from Criterion's Eclipse series of DVDs. Great Japanese noir from Nikkatu studio. Contains 5 films: I Am Waiting / Rusty Knife / Take Aim at the Police Van / Cruel Gun Story / A Colt is My Passport

I know there are others on blu-ray, but my brain isn't working right now.

If you're region free the UK version is still in print.

I had resigned myself to never seeing this film in a decent widescreen transfer, as the DVD from Artisan looked truly terrible, but this release looks promising. I know the current listing on this site shows it at 110 minutes, but I wonder if it will also include the extended 129 minute cut, too.

There's Alain Corneau's SERIE NOIRE, which is an adaptation of Jim Thompson's A HELL OF A WOMAN.

You have the remake of Insomnia listed, the original Norwegian Insomnia is being released by Criterion in July! I've always preferred the original, I still have the Criterion DVD from long ago.

Just my 2 cents, but I actually prefer the Studio Canal version due to the color timing. I just got it a few weeks back and sold the Criterion. It is region B locked, however.

The Director's cut is included but i'm afraid that will be standard definition. Only the theatrical cut is high def. But i'm still happy about that as I think I might prefer the theatrical version for once!

Thanks for all the suggestions, and nice words as well. It's really a community effort, and I'm happy that it's helped so many already.

I'm still going through some of the suggestions throughout the thread that I may have missed, or that deserve another look, but recently I've added:

Classic:

Caught
All the King's Men

Neo/Modern:

Série Noire
The Last Seduction
Insomnia (1997)
Swerve

Has anyone seen the 1948 noir, He Walked by Night? Going to watch it later today so I was just wondering if anyone had any thought on the film.

Funny, but I just came across my DVD of this one last night while looking for something else. It's a terrific noir film, though some might argue it's a police procedural rather than a genuine noir. These days it would probably be called a "docu-drama".

Some say that it was the inspiration for Dragnet, but that's not quite true. Jack Webb is in the cast, and he became friends with the police technical advisor on the film, and that was what inspired Dragnet.

If you're only familiar with Richard Basehart from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, this film will be a revelation. He made an astonishingly good bad guy.

Really looking forward to watching this one. I had not heard much about it, but the plot synopsis sounded like it would be right up my alley. Thanks for that bit of information on the film btw!

When I watched the Big Sleep I liked some parts of it, but at the same time I felt the movie was a mess. Was this butchered by the studio like Touch of Evil?

Well, I found some of the answers here: http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=1360265

Maybe we will get a true restored version of the Big Sleep one day?
